Hey y’all. I just wanted to thank everybody for your suggestions. Haven’t had time to reply to individual posts, but I will try some of your suggestions. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time yet to re-wash the blanket due to the massive mountain of clothes downstairs that need to be washed. 😦 I’ll get there someday, lol…

I can’t get Febreze to work at all. It seems to just mask odors rather than get rid of them.

That’s my 2 cents, anyway.

Masondoggy - I noticed yesterday in the vitamin/mineral/supplements aisle at Walmart that they also sell tea tree oil, if you try that route. The stuff is anti-fungal and anti-microbial, so it kills the stuff causing the odor as well.

Lots of cloth diaperers use it in their diaper washes. 🙂

I’m gonna get covered in soap and water after I say this but I don’t use sheets or pillow cases and my blanket hasn’t been washed in like two years. My bed smells like me basically and it’s comforting that way. It’s not a bad smell but it’s a far cry from the way brand new clothes smell.
Um - yeah - that’s pretty nasty. :hypno:

Personally, I wouldn’t know what that was like…🤷 😃 😃

I can’t either. I had one of the couch cushion covers that at one time was just nasty smelling. Had a soured milk smell to it. I tried shampooing it with the carpet shampoo, nope. My mom recommended febreeze, didn’t work. I also tried taking it to a dry cleaners. They would not touch the cushion. They were afraid it would fall apart if they tried cleaning it! After brainstorming with my mom I decided to go ahead and throw it in the wash on gentle cycle and then hang it out to dry on the line. That was the only thing that worked. The cover came out just fine too.

After that little experiment I have gotten to were I wash these particular covers once a year in the washing machine. We have another set that I don’t throw in the wash. They are way too old and I’m afraid these really would fall apart.

I have also tried febreeze on other things with out much success.

Ugh.

Ds has a new down comforter on his bed. A few weeks ago, I noticed that his room smelled like dead animal and made him strip his bed and take the bedding downstairs to be washed. Magically, the room suddenly smelled better.

Well, due to my never-ending mountain of laundry downstairs, I didn’t get to washing his comforter until yesterday. I just got it out of the dryer this morning and it STINKS. It smells like ds’s sneakers!

Help! I don’t want to have to pitch this comforter because it’s a really, really nice blanket. But I don’t know if I’ll ever get that smell out, especially now that it’s been through the dryer. Any ideas?
If its real down, it may not be washable. Mildewed down smells really really bad. I know, my husband washed a $300 down comforter that was dry clean only and I couldn’t save it. (frustrating, because I will never get another one on our budget).

Absolutely - some are washable and some are not. Even those that are washable must be dried in a VERY large capacity dryer or they will stay damp and get ucky. And, frustrating enough, mine says it can be washed and dried, but to NOT use commercial machines! So if you don’t have extra capacity machines at home you are pretty much screwned. I’ve not had to wash mine yet - but I know I’ll be a nervous wreck when I finally do. They are so very expensive, I doubt I would purchase another one either if this one went bad.

I find that soaking stinky clothing in white vinegar does the trick. Soak it for several hours then wash. Should take care of the problem!

Vinegar is awesome. It works great in getting smells out of the microwave too. All you need to do is put some vinegar in a cup and turn on the microwave for 3 minutes. There will be no more nasty smells.

I think I will try the vinegar when I wash it. (It is supposed to be washable and I’ve washed it before with no problems). I will get to it someday…I actually got most of the laundry caught up yesterday. I’m quite proud of myself. 😃

Now I just have a huge mountain here in the living room of folded up laundry that needs put away. Someday…,

While I agree with this for most items, soaking feathers for hours in anything can’t be good. I think perhaps a rinse with vinegar would be good, but not a long soak. You don’t want the feathers to get weak and rot. Hours would be far too long. IMHO
