We have to offer stipend for the priest on the occasion of wedding/baptism?

I really don’t know about that. I signed the check and paid to the order of the Parish, not to the priest. Is that correct?

I offered $300 for the wedding and $100 for the baptism of my child. Are these amount ok?

Thank you

I also signed the check ($150) on the occasion of my daughter’s First communion/Confession too 🙂

It is appropriate for people to make a gift to priests who have favored them with some service, but it would be considered the serious sin of simony if you were “paying for” sacramental services. Priests’ salaries are notoriously low, and I’m sure your priest appreciated your gift.

I would suggest you ask somone locally, either the priest or someone in the office. In our diocese, by diocesan particular law, the stipend for weddings, baptisms, funerals, etc, goes to the Works of Charity fund of the parish, not to the priest. In our diocese, if you want to give something to the priest you have to do so specifically, not just merely give the stipend check to the parish. You would have to give him cash or a check specifically for him.

Even this is a questionable area. Catholics don’t pay for sacraments. A church may suggest that a particular offering be made.

At the circumcision of Jesus, Mary and Joseph made the offering that was prescribed, but that’s not the Catholic Church.

If you couldn’t or wouldn’t pay, would the marriage or baptism have been refused?
