Because the Divine Law is written on every human heart. When things are done that violate the Law, righteousness convicts us to defend the Law of God.
That is very good thinking. The challenge is defend without judging.
very psychology of mind

question still was, why the tendency to judge?

nature and people offend us? sometimes only?
As Vico mentioned, it can be due to a spirit of arrogance - forgetful of one’s own faults. That is not necessarily a “subconscious” tendency when considering causes such as spiritual pride and spiritual blindness.

But you have a good point in pursuing the elusive answer as to “Why?”

Perhaps another part of your answer can be gleaned from the following, which is confirmed by most social psychologists:

When people get into groups, they often tend to pick on one member . . . to make themselves feel superior.

A larger scale model of that same phenomenon can be found in the mainstream media. They will hold up the most notorious criminal for all to be aghast at. people point and stare and say to themselves things such as, (“I’m not like that”.) As long as people are in that mode, they are not too likely to begin concentrating on their own faults. The cycle kind of feeds itself.

The challenge is defend without judging.
What is there to defend if there is no judgement? If I cannot say, “There is a wrong and there is a right: this thing that you are doing is wrong,” then what do I have to defend?

Maybe we speak of different sorts of judgement.

There is council—one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which is knowing right from wrong, or right judgement. There is also fortitude, which is the strength to act on right council. That judgement which is council—this is the judgement that allows a person to use their free will to live a holy life, which takes fortitude (or courage).

On the other hand, there is what judgement means to people today, which is sort of a condemnation of actions or of people. For some reason it has been severed from objective reality and is blamed entirely on subjective beliefs. This is a distortion or a deception about the way things really are.

There are things that are wrong whether you know they are wrong, want them to be wrong, think they are wrong, like that they are wrong, or not. They are wrong completely independent of what people think.

That is the realm of right judgement. It does not matter what I think about what you are doing. It matters that what you are doing is either objectively wrong, or objectively right.

This kind of judgement is the basis of the conscience. It doesn’t matter what you think or feel. It is based on what is. It doesn’t require someone to make a judgement, it already is wrong or right.

Just like the man Jesus.
He put up no defense.
He did not judge his own death yet.
Only those after his death subject to final judgment.

Sorry! You said the challenge is to defend without judging. I thought if there is need for a defense, there is already a judging in place.

I think Jesus describes it clearly - first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

The speech is the figuratively likeness. The question is the literally of meanings that are his. How does the man delta his sight without plucking out the sight ability. This is the remaining challenge.

ok how about clean up your side of the street before you complain how dirty my side is

Who has splinter, Who has plank?
Reverses itself the minute i judge my accuser and speak?
Yes. The man Jesus closed his eyes on world. Then came back with a body of light. Walked through the wall and disappeared and rises to heaven independent of faith.

This is about hypocrisy, not about judging others. It also suggests that once the plank is out of your eye, you are to help your brother remove the speck from his own.

I would say that the state of your heart when correcting is also important.

To correct a sinner must be done from a place of love with reconciliation and forgiveness ready to embrace them.

Pushing them further from God by not loving them is problematic.

Why people judge actions would be ideally to gently push and encourage people back on the right path.

However some reasons people have a tendency to judge:
  1. Virtue signaling: Basically announcing I am righteous and they are not
  2. We are tribal in nature: We seek out like minded people
  3. Echo Chamber: We like to re-enforce each-others ideas and beliefs
  4. Vanity: Judging superficially to re-enforce our self image
  5. Pride: We feel we have a moral authority which elevates us to a point we are better

Its very simple
1.condemnation judgement
2.Earthy judgment
Condemnation Judgment is NOT allowed. This is because we CANNOT tell a person he is going to HELL. please don’t Ever Ever Ever tell a person that, That’s God’s Job and only God or else you could be judged to hell. Its biblical.
  1. Earthly judgment is allowed. This is just telling a person or good friend, relative " hey, you can’t cheat on your wife, hey you can’t kill, hey you shouldn’t steal etc…"
