Stop paying debts and bankrupcy

If we are disabled to work and have no income, but a little of unemployment and not knowing if my husband can get disability (I can’t), with almost not savings and no other way to get and income. It is a sin to stop paying our credit cards bills?

A lawyer sugested us not to file for bankrupcy, but just stop payments, and I have a strong filling that it is not right, unless we no way at all to pay even for some time. We do not have any way to pay all the debts.

Many of the larger Dioceses have Catholic Charities and they have a branch of them do credit counseling. They will negotiate with your creditors to keep you from having to file bankruptcy. Their charge is based on your income and they roll it into your monthly payment. I know they have helped many people and may be able to assist you. Check them out before you go the full fledge route of bankruptcy.

You should certainly attempt to work with the creditors, but in the end, putting food on the table and a roof over your head has to come first.

I’ll be praying for you, too.
