Sexuality can actually be quite fluid, this seems to be the natural state for at least some people, especially when their younger.
If you’ve ever been in contact with higher school and college age, nothing is entirely set in stone.

I think it’s fair to say that Ann Widdecombe is considered something of an embarrassment by most Catholics in the UK. Her popularity peaked when she memorably said that Michael Howard had “something of the night about him”, but it’s been downhill ever since.

It seems the LGBQ folks don’t want to give to others what they have taken for themselves.

There’s a lot of politics and ideology involved in this issue, so much that I naturally avoid it. But I want to point out the issue may be with the language.

For example, I know people who would not like the statement, “science may find a way to cure autism”.

Many people don’t see autism like cancer or an infection, for example. They don’t necessarily like the language of a “cure”. It’s more complex.

I can only imagine that those of a homosexual inclination would not be very pleased of some speaking of their sexual preference as if you were speaking of cancer or the flu.

As someone who knows a bit about science but nothing about medicine, I doubt that something so complex can be “cured”, any more than we can “cure” , say, depression. Many don’t even see an issue specifically with the attraction, as it has been brought forth many times that one can be chaste and holy no matter what attractions they experience.

And certainly many heterosexual people struggle much with addictions to sex, pornography, and whatnot. Of course, one can argue forever about natural inclinations and all, but in the end, it all boils down to concupiscence. There’s no “cure” for that one outside of the spiritual and ascetical.

There are people with sexual attractions who find their situation incompatible with the life they wish to lead, and would rather have have attractions changed, or maybe even have no attractions at all. Science may help them. There is no logical argument except in favor of said science. I hope no one is talking about programming babies like USB drives; adults are what this should be about. Morality can’t be legislated and that science is likely way off in the future anyway. For now, the spiritual and ascetical…

One of the problems with the term “conversion therapy” is that it covers everything from electroshock all the way down to abstinence support groups (yes, I’ve seen the Courage apostolate, which doesn’t attempt to change people’s attractions, but supports a chaste lifestyle, called “conversion therapy”).

Here’s a hypothetical—what if you had a parent of a kid who claimed to be gay as a teen, but then identified straight as an adult. This parent’s friend comes to them later for advice because they have a teen who claims to be gay.
If the first parent gives the second parent the benefit of their advice, and the second teen identifies as straight as an adult, can the parent be accused of conversion therapy? 🤔

I wouldn’t be surprised if within our century we actually could manipulate sexual attraction at least to some extent. There’s a lot we don’t understand but ultimately with people attracted to the same sex there’s something going on where the triggers that activate arousal are female in a male and male in a female. It’s probably extremely complex but if you can at least isolate certain major factors and change them, you could shift a person on the spectrum. Say, a homosexual person to feeling more bisexual or a heterosexual person feeling more bisexual.

Behavior and experience definitely play a part in it. Bisexuality seems to be more common in women, but women are better at communicating and sharing things with each other. They’re also on the receiving end of male physical or sexual abuse. So these things will push more borderline women into a bisexual lifestyle as opposed to men.

I don’t expect this to develop in a western country, USA, Europe, Australia, etc., but somewhere like China is completely different because they don’t care about our sensitivities.

Bear in mind though that such methods will be used more often the other way around
