He could have had it all, but instead became a priest serving Catholics who were forced underground by persecution during the English Reformation. For serving them, he was executed by the state.

St Edmund addressed the court and said: ‘In condemning us you condemn all your own ancestors… to be condemned by their degenerate descendants is both gladness and joy to us. God lives. Posterity will live.’
