In 1917 three children saw the Virgin Mary repeatedly in Fatima, Portugal. Francisco, 9 years old, and Jacinta, 7 years old, both died within 3 years from the Spanish flu epidemic. Having been radically changed by their experience of the Virgin Mary, they were both beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, and their bodies are now in the basilica in the great Catholic shrine that has arisen in Fatima. The third child, Lucia, died in 2005 and also may be beatified. (Beatification is a major step towards being officially canonized as a saint.)
