The famous photo of a little girl running on the road, her body burned by napalm, helped end the war in Vietnam. They took her to the morgue because they thought she was dead, where her family found her three days later. Her body scarred and with daily pain, she said “my life was like a cup of coffee. Very dark; with hatred, anger, bitterness, sorrow.” Become a Christian, her life became a story of forgiveness and love, even forgiveness for those who dropped the bomb that burned her terribly. She said another time that she was changed by “the picture of Jesus when they put him on the cross and they kill him, so Jesus say, Father, forgive them, they didn’t know what they are doing.” So that picture helps me say the same thing, “and the more I prayed for my enemies, the softer my heart became.”
