A man tried to rape twelve-year-old Maria Goretti. When she resisted he stabbed her many times, and after some hours she died. Dying, she forgave her assailant and prayed for him. After six years in prison, she appeared to him in his cell and smiled at him. That was the turning point in her life. After he came out of prison, he sought forgiveness from her family, and went to a Capuchin monastery where he was a gardener the rest of his life. When she was canonized in 1950, 250,000 people came, one of the largest crowds ever at a canonization.

Not sure if this is true, but somewhere I had heard that he accompanied Maria’s mother to her canonization Mass.

He didn’t actually try to rape her. He was an older boy and his family and Maria’s lived in the same farmhouse. He was into pornography and he wanted Maria to do the things he saw in the pictures. He tried to talk her into it more than once and she refused because it was a sin. Finally he caught her in the house with the baby when everyone else was out and he threatened to kill her if she didn’t do what he wanted but she still wouldn’t so he stabbed her.
