A hypothetical question of morality: would it be sinful for a gay man and a straight woman, both of whom are unattached, to live together as roommates? How about the reverse: a straight man and a gay woman? And finally, a gay man and a gay woman? Let’s assume in all three situations, the individuals have no sexual feelings for one another whatsoever and there are no neighbors to result in the appearance of scandal. Does the opposite-gender arrangement itself become an occasion or near-occasion for sin?

A faithful Catholic choosing to live with a homosexual non-relative of the opposite sex may still cause him or herself temptation.

Hi meltzer:

Is such a situation even possible? Presumably, people room together (share apartments) because there are not enough resources to go around (ie, a shortage of money, or a shortage of units). These things happen mainly in cities, I think, where there are lots of people around, lots of neighbours. If there are no neighbours anywhere around at all, you’d be thinking a sort of cabin-in-the-woods sort of arrangement, which is conceivable, but the density of “gay” individuals in remote rural areas makes the likelihood of this ever happening seem remote (they tend to live in the big cities in Canada, where they establish “districts”, such as the “gay village” in Toronto, say).

But assuming all of these things, if there’s no feelings for each other, all they are doing is sharing a house, then no, I can’t see any problem with it. They would be living as “brother and sister”, as it were.

I’m reminded of the response,“if you have to ask,you can’t afford it.” If you sir, have to ask, you’ll never get the messiah’s message. Homosexuality is intrinsically IMMORAL. If you have to ask a moral question ,you’re only trying to justify yourself. Why waste everybodies time? If I may ask?

You may ask. I’m referring to same-sex attraction, not homosexual behavior, and the former is regarded as disordered but not immoral by both Catholicism and Orthodox Judaism. I also state this is a hypothetical question; it is not an attempt at self-justification. Although you may not find it particularly interesting, I don’t share your opinion that it is a waste of everyone’s time.

I dont think there is anything wrong with it. Also nothing wrong with two straight friends of opposite sex to move in together either, if the relationship is platonic.
