Let’s make a campaign to let kids know that it’s wrong to bully straight kids. As a straight kid, I was bullied a lot. No one should bully a straight kid. So let’s make sure that straight kids don’t get bullied anymore.

Bullying anyone is wrong. I support any initiative that has the aim of bringing attention and a stop to bullying.

Why just straight kids? Why not everyone of every sexual orientation, every religion, every race?

Two points:
  1. It just so happens that the number one cause of death for kids with SSA is suicide, and their suicide rate is far higher than “straight” kids.
And since it’s not a sin to be a person with SSA we can safely say it’s God’s will that we should stop them from being bullied.
  1. Using point number 1 to politicize and promote a “queer” agenda is wrong. But stopping someone from being bullied is not necessarily promoting any kind of political agenda.

No one should be bullied. But are straight kids bullied just for being straight, the way gay kids are for simply being gay? It’s not exactly the equivalent. In the case of straight kids, I think there is usually some other reason why they’re bullied.

Because we’ve had campaigns to stop bullying/discrimination due to race, religion and disability already.

Does not fit the narrative. Will be rejected. Stick with the program. No dissent allowed.

Yeah I don’t know why you want to start a campaign only for “straight kids.” There are many other things that are getting attacked. Bullying is intrinsically evil.

Having taught high school for 33 years, I came to a very sad conclusion about bullying years ago. There are 2 “types” of students who are bullied far more than any others …kids who are obese and those who are perceived to be gay or lesbian. I was on the school district (district is large - there are 14 high schools) steering committee on the bullying problem and the statistics broke my heart. If you are a young man who is effeminate, even just by the way you might run or walk, then you are an automatic target. In many cases these students are almost run out of school because others make their lives a living hell. Is it any wonder that the suicide rate for young gays is so high compared to other groups?

About six years ago THE STUDENTS asked to start a GSA (gay- straight alliance) on our campus. In the beginning almost all 100+ members were straight kids. Slowly gay students began to show up for meetings and events and the whole atmosphere changed as far as bullying was concerned. When the new 9th graders start calling kids fags or queer or using the word gay in a derogatory manner, they are told by older students that using that language is not appropriate or welcome on our campus. The sponsors of our GSA were both straight AND Catholic. I hope other schools have the success we have had in making everyone feel welcome in the learning environment. 🙂

I think the OP’s intent is being misconstrued. My opinion is the point is No One should be bullies, gay straight or otherwise. So why just focus on ssa bullying? Pretty sure this was the message .

I get the point, but the fact is that same-sex attracted kids are often bullied specifically because of their sexual orientation, whereas kids with healthier sexualities are not (unless of course they are falsely believed to be “gay”)

To some extent there is a kind of philosophical innocence in this. These kids correctly perceive warped sexuality to be a weakness, and then engage in the typical bullying behavior these kinds of kids delight in inflicting upon all whom they perceive as weaker or less fortunate than themselves. As with all bullying parents and teachers have to be on the lookout for it and respond appropriately when it occurs.

The answer to bad conduct is not bad clubs. Our children are raised in a culture of broken homes and moral relativism. Contriving these ideological clubs does not solve the problem. It just redirects children into a particular narrative and ideology.

Children are no longer innocent. The existence of clubs and days of silence with political/ideological names is proof of that.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:
I was NEVER bullied for being straight. I was picked on for being short.
I played softball and 9 out of the 13 girls were/are gay. My gay teammates never picked on me for liking boys. 🤷

Yeah, I’m pretty sure the OP gets that bullying is always wrong, but was making a semi-sarcastic remark about the tendency to think that the bullying of gay people is special (in and of itself, independent of frequency or severity). To address that
No one should be bullied. But are straight kids bullied just for being straight, the way gay kids are for simply being gay? It’s not exactly the equivalent. In the case of straight kids, I think there is usually some other reason why they’re bullied.
The reason why people are bullied is because there are people who bully other people and will jump on any excuse, any perceived difference that exists and bully them for that. If there is no difference, then they’ll make one up. Bullies don’t actually care if you’re straight or gay, they just want to bully you.

For this reason, I tend to think the whole “now don’t make fun of people just because they’re ___” approach is misguided. At best, it will redirect the bullying to some other group that doesn’t appear to be as protected, that appears more vulnerable. The “reasons” they cite in the insults are not really why they’re bullying them in the first place, but rather a combination of “because they can get away with it” and their own insecurities

I personally prefer the “now don’t bully people because it’s wrong and we’ll tan your hide if you do” approach over the “it’s insensitive to pick on people because of ___” approach.

It is true that gay kids are bullied, with being gay being the reasons the bullies claim, but it is also true that straight kids are bullied for being gay despite not being gay because the bullies can make it stick.

All of this is not to say that we shouldn’t focus on helping the current victims of the worst of it, only that that’s not enough and it is necessary to address the root of the problem.

Why assume this was an ideologically-based club with a social or political agenda? As described, it was a club designed to prevent gay students from being bullied. What is wrong with that?

Because we’ve had campaigns to stop bullying/discrimination due to race, religion and disability already.
One can argue we already have campaigns for bullying of straight kids as well. I think you missed the point I was trying to make to the OP.

Our school district has had 6 suicides so far this year.
A disproportionately high number of suicides are kids with SSA.
It is easy to stop SSA bullying - it just takes a school community to buy-in.

On my desk is a mass card from the funeral of a young man who killed himself in September. He self identified as gay. I want to go to as few young peoples’ funerals as possible.

We have campaigns to stop young people drinking and driving. Not all kids drink and drive yet we see no problem with such campaigns.
We have campaigns to stop SSA bullying. Why should people see them as a problem?

There are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world.

If only 1% of people have SSA then there are 12,000,000 “gay” and “lesbian” Catholics.

Should we not protect them, and show them they are welcome in our “home” - the Church. Or should we tell them that to find solace and help they must join a politicized “gay” or “queer” group?

Or - since there are more than 12,000,000 Catholics who masturbate, consume porn, fornicate, commit adultery, use contraceptives or get divorced, we should stop being hypocritical about sexual sin and say ALL who sin sexually should be excluded from the Church?

My goal with this thread was to expose the hypocrisy of those who see no problem with an LGBT anti-bullying campaign.

And that goal was met.
