Has anyone ever heard of a consecration of the host, where it is broken and then lifted, one piece in each hand, into the air, basically making a “V” with the arms? While the priest says “This is my Body” at the same time?

It happened at a Mass a few weeks ago, and it bothered me. It seems the priests are somewhat liberal in that parish. In their homilies, they are more likely to extoll the life is Martin Luther King than any Catholic Saint.

It’s an abuse that I first heard about in Redemptionis Sacramentum but which I’ve since experienced twice, both times at a French Mass, one in a small village in Quebec and one at a catechetical conference Mass celebrated by a bishop.

It is inappropriate.

The Host is to be broken at the Rite of Fraction, not the Consecration.
I have seen this before… probably a well-meaning but misguided attempt to have the words “broke it, and gave it to them saying…” coincide with their actions at that point.

It is sad when priests decide they know best how to say Mass instead of following the Church liturgy.

GIRM should be required reading for them all.
