Reading all the comments about the fact that the concelebration (sp?) is a pre-Vat2 sort of thing is actually kind of exciting and empowering…anyone agree? I think it’s an indication of even better things to come on the traditional front! 🙂
Since we have so many St. Martin’s people on here…I was wondering, the regular NO mass is at 9:00, right? I’ve never been to the NO at St. Martin’s, but I’m sure it’s the best of the new mass and full of reverance.

If I go to an NO Mass at St Martins (once a month generally), I go to the 11am one. I’ve never been to the other NO Masses there. I know the 11am one is very reverent.

I do not agree. The so-called “concelebration” of a newly ordained priest in the EF does not really resemble the concelebrations that we know today. It featured the newly ordained priest at a kneeler at some distance from the altar, dressed in a folded chasuable, reciting words of consecration silently.

In this case, the priest was actually up at the altar with a server, which sounds different from what you’ve described, but since it was my first experience with concelebration, of course I don’t know. Either way, at least it was taking place.

I agree with Chatter. The only “concelebrations” in the 1962 liturgical books that I know of are at a Solemn High Mass with the MC, the “deacon,” and “subdeacon” at the altar with the celebrant, each with a different role. That both the deacon and subdeacon can be themselves priests does not make this a concelebrated Mass per se.

Hmm…interesting. So, what is the purpose of concelebration, anyway? It’s probably been posted here somewhere but I’m still not clear. We’ve established that it isn’t “to consecrate hosts”.

I suppose to increase the solemnity of the Mass. It certainly doesn’t make the Mass more valid. Masses are said by the priest(s) to offer the Holy Sacrifice for our benefit; consecrating hosts for those other than the priests are optional.

If i have to go i usally go to the 11am mass. Very reverant but i still can’t get over all the EMHC’s.

Sorry, I’m blanking. What does that stand for?
Edit: Oh, right…just realized it. 😊 I don’t have a theological problem with ITH Communion…I just think it’s very unessesarily risky.

A priest has to be properly vested to con-celebrate mass (at a minimum be wearing an alb and stole). I have know priests to act as Master-of-Ceremonies during mass, and then place a stole on when distributing holy communion.

Traditionally, mass is celebrated with a Priest, Deacon and Sub-Deacon, but things got changed around with Vatican II. As I understand it, it is possible for a Priest to act as Deacon or Sub-Deacon during masses, but only one priest can offer one sacrifice at a time under the Missal of 1962.
