Strange Lust/Sleep Problem

Let me start by saying I know dreams cannot be sin. However, in this case I felt like I was both awake and dreaming at the same time until after the fact.

So I was dreaming. I had a dirty dream. Then I was in a partially awake state where I felt I could somewhat control my thoughts. For some reason I chose to lust, but if I was fully awake I doubt I would have lusted.

Now here’s another strange bit: when my mind chose to lust I ejaculated. This seems to indicate the whole thing was a dream. Also, earlier there was another temptation spot and I chose the good option. When the spot where the Lust temptation came around, it felt far harder to resist than normal because as soon as my mind started to Lust there really wasn’t any going back until I realized.

Please help me! I don’t know if I was awake when I chose to Lust. It sure feels like I was awake. On the other hand, the whole thing was kind of confusing. After ejaculating I was both awake, and dreaming it seems.

This could be Satan trying to trick me into thinking I’ve sinned to prevent me from receiving the Eucharist today as I haven’t received the Eucharist in at least a few months.

My reaction: if you can’t tell whether you were awake or asleep then you were not awake. I would suggest however that you consult your priest.

I won’t be able to answer whether that is a sin or not, since I’m not qualified to do it.

But when I look at your post, I felt like looking at a mirror. I struggle with the same things as you do. Temper issues, intrusive thoughts, lust, and a little bit of scrupulosity. I also am unable to receive the Eucharist for weeks eventhough I try my best to receive it as often as I can. I’ve had this situation you described a couple of times

So as someone who is struggling also, I’m advising you. Get a spiritual director! A priest maybe. Ask around your family and friends if they have a priest’s contact information and message him.

God bless

You were likely still in a state of sleep. You can’t control your mind in that situation, so as long as you weren’t choosing to touch yourself or anything, it’s not under your control. If you are still in doubt talk to a priest.

We usually remember the part of a dream just before we wake, and it can seem so clear, like we were conscious or awake within the dream. In the events you described, I think the moral choice, if it can be called a choice, took place within your dream. Be at peace. My advice would be to receive the Eucharist today and bring your question to the priest at your next confession.

So called " Wet dreams " happen sometimes. Usually we use our mind to judge if something is good or not, but in dreams, you can’t think within a dream, your thoughts turn into “dream actions” I am not fully certain, but I would say its not a sin. Lustful thoughts are bad, but in dreams we can’t really stop ourselves from lustful thoughts as they just come and immidiately turn into action, not giving us much time to drop the line of thought. Thats my opinion though, so I am not fully sure.

I wound up receiving the Eucharist. I was too embarrassed to ask Father before Mass.

I don’t think I actually even lusted honestly. I had a dirty dream, and I had the option to “choose” to lust or not. Even though I chose the lust option I don’t think I even had engaged in deliberately thinking dirty thoughts.

I’ll bring it up next Confession.

A choice made when sleeping or dreaming is not the same as a choice made consciously when awake. I’ve decided in a couple of dreams to do some lustful act, like begin making love with a total stranger, that simply would not happen in real life. I’ve also decided in dreams to go to a meeting in my office with no pants on, or to use a toilet located in the middle of an open space where anyone walking by can see. I didn’t feel a need to confess any indecency after those dreams, because they were not reality and in real life neither I nor any sane person would do these things.

Indeed, dreams cannot be a sin unless one tried during waking hours to have such a dream. The only reason I’m concerned is because I felt I was partially awake.

I’m gonna be totally frank here as it might help someone. I had the same experience when I decided to quit masturbating. I thought I was awake and consciously fell off the wagon so to speak. When I got all the way woke up, I realized I was still dressed (not undressed like in my dream) and my hands were nowhere near where they had been in the dream, and the whole business simply had not happened anywhere but the dream. It’s the body and brain discharging a little energy, that’s all it is.

You can’t be asleep and awake at the same time. If you’re even partially asleep then you’re too groggy to have Full Knowledge or Deliberate Consent.

Yes, I know what you mean. I just got the guy from the Diocese at my Newman Club to be my spiritual director, so I’ll ask him about the 3 things for Mortal Sin soon. 👍
