A church I was visiting has a perpetual adoration chapel. I went into the chapel to do my penance after confession last Saturday and noticed a fairly disturbing symbol on the top of the monstrance.
It was a large triangle with an eye emblazoned in the center. I wasn’t sure what this is, does anyone know?

It is a Symbol for God, the triangle represents the Trinity and I’m not sure about the eye. I’d guess the eye could represent God’s omniscience.

THE EYE
OF H O** **RUS
SYMBOL OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN RELIGION

An eye in a triangle. On US paper currency. Is Pagan.

The abstract Trinity is portrayed through the geometric symbol of an equilateral triangle. The three angles and the three sides are equal, but they constitute only a single surface (not a pyramid) An eye is depicted in the center of the triangle to show that God sees all.

Try going to this website to find the Trinitarian triangle surrorrounded by angel in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.

Have fun finding it! The Basilica is absolutely beautiful!

You need Quick Time to view it!

We had a similar monstrance in our Adoration chapel, but it’s been retired.

This is one of the ancient symbols for the All-seeing of Eye of God… God is present in the 3 persons of the Blessed Trinity and His eye is ALL-SEEING…

Hope this helps…

Dr. Colossus:
Just kidding :D. I agree with the other posters here who say it’s a symbol of the Triune nature of God and His omniscience.
Don’t ever kid about God. No kidding.

I was not kidding about God (at least, I was certainly not saying that God was somehow similar to Sauron). I was simply offering another “theory” as to what the symbol might be. It seems to me that the suggestion above that it’s a pagan symbol was more ridiculous.

Bishop Sheen says, “The only thing worth taking seriously is the salvation of a single soul.”

Orientale Lumen:
Can anyone provide some history on the use of this symbol?
This symbol is often a feature at the top of baroque altar pieces.

Dr. Colossus,

I thought your joke was rather funny. Not distastful. I thought it was really a reductio ad absurdium of the anti-Catholic argument that the Church reflects a paganized Christianity. Whenever those arguments can be made to look foolish I laugh. It is not a joke at the expense of our Lord and God.

It may be a pagan symbol but it appeared in my religion book for second grade back in 1942. For me to remember that it must have really made an impression on me. Of course you are correct it is also a symbol from ancient Egypt.

WHOA!!! That is absolutely the most INCREDIBLE panorama I have seen in a long time!!!

I didn’t find the triangle, because there is so MUCH to see there. PLEASE tell me where it is?!?!

The ancient Egyptians derived the symbol from the appearance of a total eclipse of the sun.

Here is an example of the Egyptian symbol of the Eye of Horus:

From what I understand, the eye of Horus doesn’t necessarily have to be contained within a pyramid, nor a triangle.

The Catholic symbol of the Blessed Trinity, naturally uses a three-equal-sides geometric shape to symbolize the Three Persons of the One Godhead, Who Is Omnipotent.

The Catholic symbol of the Trinity isn’t “pagan.”
