What are the strangest church signs/names y’all have seen?

I ask this, because just today, I ran across two that really just struck me as odd.

The first, for “Real Life CHURCH” (yes, that’s exactly the grammatical construction), with a stylized image of a cross on fire. Now, down here in the South, burning crosses don’t exactly conjure up images of holiness, so this sign was noteworthy for that reason alone.

The second was for something called “Warrior’s Church”, and the picture for that one (they’re very big on logos to go with the worship communities down here) was a silhouette of a man, arms raised at his sides, who looked more than a little bit like a Klingon from Star Trek.

So it got me thinking- what are the oddest name/sign/logo combos you’ve run across?

I do not remember what kind of church it was:

The marquee read:
“Forgive your enemies…it will mess with their head”

It struck me as almost un-Christian

Male silhouette with earphones plugged into a cross, with the words "i-God"

From a church in Arizona,

“You think it’s hot here? – God”

One of them around here (Protestant) has a billboard that says “Don’t wait for the hearse to take you to church” 😃

The oddest that I’ve seen is a church called “The Church on 53” It literally is named after the highway that it sits on. I think the church is non-denominational, and it just strikes me as the oddest name for a church. Usually someone at least throws in the name of Christ, or of one of the saints when naming a church, but I guess if you can’t think of one of those, then just name it by its address. 😃

I forgot to add the suffix game.

'Round here, there’s a lot of churches with any combination of the following suffixes:
-of God
-of Christ
-of Christ in God
-in Christ
-of Prophecy

So it’s not unusual to have, say “Church of the Holy Spirit of Prophecy in Christ”. Or “Abundant Grace Church of Christ in God”.

If I were a drinker, it would make for a pretty good game…

About the goofiest sign I have seen is one at a Baptist (I think) church in Pittsburgh that says something like

“Sign broken, come in on Sunday at 10am for the message”

We’ve got a lot of that around here, too. But what gets me is the “open the Bible and pick any phrase” game. So you get things like:

“Church of the Living Water of the Reedeming Rock”

I keep waiting for someone to acidentally post the sign incorrectly and then we’ll have,

“Church of Our Watered Rocking Reedemer”

Not strange, but appropriate. “There is something missing in Ch rch. U.”

My friends and I had a game for naming Protestant Churches when we kept noticing the same words in all their names. We’d cut up pieces of paper with the ‘buzzwords’ on them and draw them out to create Churches.

Church of the Living Christ
Living Water Church
Tabernacle of Christ
The Living Church of the Tabernacle
Tabernacle of the Living Water
Christ’s Tabernacle of Life

You could get Catholic Parishes by poking fingers in Saints Books, but that’s really just an interesting way to learn about random saints more than a game.

Try Romans 12:14-21, especially the bolded sentence.
14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Someone mentioned it, and I’ve seen the picture of the church sign.

(Around high school tournament time…)

Jesus Saves…
He shoots…
HE SCORES!

🙂

Peace,
Pastor Gary
Come to think about it…it was a Lutheran church that had this sign…was it you Pastor Gary who put it up? LoL

Joking aside…the reason I said it sounded un-Christian was our doing things for our enemies should not be because it “messes with their heads”. That will naturally be the outcome…but we should not do it just because we want to “mess with their heads”.

We should do it because we want their thoughts to burn like coal and help them reconsider their evil ways…not simply to mess with their psyche.

It is the motivation for the forgiveness. That’s all I am saying.

Either way…thank you for that tidbit of information!

This is really bad and true at the same time unfortunately…
