Well, Jesus loved sinners - prostitutes and tax collectors were not shunned by Him.

I saw one that said:

Church of Truth

Today’s Topic: Does truth really exist?

You would think they should have discussed that before buying the sign.

Any church with “First” or “United” (and especially “First United”) in their name cracks me up, since they are NEITHER! I have seen FIRST Presbyterian Church, UNITED Presbyterian Church and FIRST UNITED Presbyterian Church. Doesn’t it look like they’re trying to “one up” each other?

But I have actually seen Second, Third and FOURTH Baptist churches and I am intrigued. What is the difference between First Baptist church and Fourth Baptist church? Are they just counting?

Yes. The First Baptist Church would be the first Baptist Church in the city. The Second Baptist Church would be the second in the city. The Third Baptist Church would be the third…

This isn’t a church. But LORD’S GYM is pretty funny. It’s has a picture of this muscle-bound Christ doing pushups with the Cross on his back.
Also not a church, but a Church’s Fried Chicken, pushing their desserts, the sign read, “worship this sundae at Church’s”.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean he encouraged them to continue beeing prostitutes and to run round Jerusalem with tunics saying, “hookers for Yeshua.”

Saw one today that doesn’t qualify as strangest, but I liked it. I didn’t catch the name of the church, but their “Ad board” out front said.

THERE ARE TWO GREAT TRUTHS
1 - THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE GOD
2 - YOU AREN’T HIM

😃 😛 😃

Peace
James

I like that one! And we need a continual reminder of that somehow, don’t we?

Yes. The First Baptist Church would be the first Baptist Church in the city. The Second Baptist Church would be the second in the city. The Third Baptist Church would be the third…
I’ve never seen them go beyond First, even in bigger cities than this – even in big cities, actually. It’s First Christian Church, First Christian Church of Whatevertown, First Christian Church of South Whatevertown, First Christian Campus Church, First…
First Southern Baptist church of the North Ridge Hills at the Lake… First Southern Baptist Church of Downtown Whatevertown…They don’t like to name them Second Anything from what I’ve seen.

eXperience Church…with the x being quite a bit larger than the rest and bright red. The building gave me the feeling of a movie theater when I drove by.

When I was growing up we went to “First Church of the Nazarene”. It was the first Nazarene church in the town where we lived. There was also “San Jose First Church of the Nazarene”.

I have seen “First Baptist Church” and “Second Baptist Church” in the same town…of the same Baptist group, 1st Southern Baptist and 2nd Southern Baptist.

Oh and I almost forgot…“Church of Jesus Christ with Signs Following”. I don’t recommend visiting that one if you’re afraid of snakes.😉

LOL, my dad tells a story when he was a teenager. He sang and played guitar in “evangelical meetings”…he was invited to sing at one such community. He realized they were of “Pentacostal persuasion” after about 10-15 minutes into the meeting…he said when the “burlap bag” was brought out and rattlesnakes dumped on the floor in front of him…he jumped up…screamed “like a girl” and ran out immediately…he had to go back later and pick up his guitar…when the snakes were back in their cages.

:rotfl:

My grandfather’s parents used to threaten to send their 4 sons to the “Holy Roller” church down the road when they were bad. After years of asking what the “Holly Rollers” were, I pieced together that it was a Pentecostal-type church, so named by my family because the members would roll on the floor when “overcome by the Spirit”. And all these years, I’d been imagining roller skaters!

So imagine my delight when I ran across a church that held its Sunday meetings at- yes, you guessed it- a roller skating rink!

The oddest that I’ve seen is a church called “The Church on 53” It literally is named after the highway that it sits on. I think the church is non-denominational, and it just strikes me as the oddest name for a church. Usually someone at least throws in the name of Christ, or of one of the saints when naming a church, but I guess if you can’t think of one of those, then just name it by its address. 😃
you think that is strange? we have a United Methodist Church on the corner of county road 666 and the church’s sign is right above the road sign–if it was not such a dangerous corner I would get out and snap a photo of it–but I am afraid I would be killed with the traffic there. I would hate to be killed on road 666, even in front of a church.

Just to comment on a couple angles here, I was raised in the Church of Christ (disples of Christ) one of those Campbellian gangs. Interesting lot - communion in both elements every sunday, and full-immersion baptism at 13.
We went to Second Christian Church, First Christian being bigger and richer. Second Christians hangs on by a finger nail now - third Christian went away decades ago, merging with First. In our little steel town we had First and second Lutheran as well.

House of Blues, a concert club, not a church, has a Gospel brunch on Sundays. Their ad reads, “Praise the Lord and pass the biscuits.”

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I’d share some information about a previous poster’s strangest church name. “The Church on 53” is at the corner of 53 and a smaller road, and the church’s address is actually on the smaller road. It’s affiliated with the Church of God, and its other “campus”, as they call it, is also named for the street its on.
As for oddly named Catholic churches, I can’t really think of any, but there is one whose name gets butchered by almost all but the parishioners and those who live in the area…St. Aloysius. Aloysius is actually a family name for me, so I know how to pronounce it, but I’m glad it hasn’t been passed down from one generation to the next.
