Overall with all things considered In My Humble Opinion YES

Any Thoughts? Pros Verses Cons?
It absolutely would as it is responsible for exporting evil on a global scale. However, it is also being used to combat evil, so it’s kind of fighting itself.

I had a sudden mental image of a dog chasing its own tail. 🙂

Hee.

🤷 We’ve established it can be used for good but does the good outweigh the bad?
Yup. Why?

Lets relate the internet to the real world. When you get in your car and drive what businesses, social places, etc do you see?

Schools, Churches, stores, parks, campgrounds, etc.

Now out of ALL the places you see, how many places out off all you see are a strip club?

I drive down the street and rarely see a strip club, etc. If it is an area I know to be places like that, I will avoid them, just as I do when surfing the net.

So yes, the good outweighs the bad.

Yeah, when I’m driving down the street naked women don’t jump out of the strip club and swamp my car… when I browse the internet I’m frequently surprised by indecency (not just pornography but other forms of indecency as well). Now, I’ve learned how to block these things but spammers get smarter every day and find new ways to force their evil upon my poor unsuspecting browser. ):

Just yesterday I somehow contracted a virus that opened porn pages all over my computer screen. Yeah, I knew how to handle it but if a kid had been in my place they would have been exposed to all manner of evil and all while in the so called ‘safety’ of their home.

I’m not sure if the good does outweigh the bad… I’m still undecided. And this is only speaking morally, I haven’t even tried to figure out the whole invasion of privacy thing.

And yeah, I get it, seeing a few pictures isn’t going to drive a person over the edge into the abyss… but it plants seeds. I’d rather have good seeds being planted in me and in my loved ones.

Then rise up and demand the removal of porn from the innerwebs.

Pros: It allows instant access to information, a lot of which many people might never get into by reading books. As a matter of fact, it was primarily through the internet that I learned about Catholicism. Search engines make it really easy for us to find something very specific that we’re looking for. It allows us to check on things instantaneously that would be much less convenient otherwise, i.e. bank accounts. It allows us to keep in touch with other people better through things like facebook, etc.

Cons: Obviously, pornography. That one is a given. Also it might discourage social interaction (it has for me in the past) and we often may become overly-dependent on it. It is a total time vacuum for many people, myself included. It also (for some people, like me) facilitates compulsive buying of things that we probably don’t need through easy-to-pay websites like eBay and Amazon.com.

Looks like this has turned out to be a little bit of a self-indictment!

I’ve actually gone for months without the internet before; it was a rather fulfilling lifestyle.

🙂 I’m sure that would be as sucessful as the attempts to remove hackers from the interwebs. These things are simply part of the system. They can’t be removed. They are like the black heart in an innocent looking sheep. 🤷

Then you concede the battle to the enemy. Maybe we can’t win, but what’s stopping ALL of us from writing our reps and demanding the removal of porn?

Maybe they all think we LIKE it. They need to hear from us.

No,The internet is just a tool like any other.
Without it,it might promote a “facade” of more morality, but just a facade,as the issues still remain.
Regarding pornography-Chinese have the internet and China has made internet pornography illegal.
Perhaps other countries could follow suit?
In the meantime, theres things that can be done to avoid it-eg:virus protection, internet filters, changing google search to moderate or strict(whatever suits you).

“The pornography industry has larger revenues than Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, Apple and Netflix combined. 2006 Worldwide Pornography Revenues ballooned to $97.06 billion. 2006 & 2005 U.S. Pornography Industry Revenue Statistics, 2006 Top Adult Search Requests, 2006 Search Engine Request Trends are some of the other statistics revealed here.”

I just want to congratulate you for putting forth the above link.

Given some of the responses in this thread, I’m somewhat surprised that some in this thread don’t take Internet Porn more seriously than some here who purport to rationalize it making it less of a problem than it already is in the Church.

Those who think Internet Porn is not as bigger of a problem than those who would diminish it by rationalization might care to read CAF’s own president Mr. Karl Keating’s concerns about it.

The internet has allowed me to grow in my faith, knowledge and love of the faith immensely. I love reading blogs by priests, nuns, and other Catholics walking in the faith and find it very often encouraging and informative.

The irony of all those who say yes, on an internet forum, is just too awesome to not point out.
I was beginning to think I was the only one who picked up on that… 😃

I think the OP’s question is one of those immeasurable “what if” questions. If we had an alternate universe to compare our own with (like us in everything but internet) and a way of quantifiably measuring the level of morality/immorality, then we could talk. 😉

I try to model myself after what the Church has to say about these things, and She generally chooses to focus on the possibilities for good (while, nonetheless, urging caution about the possibility for misuse). Here are a few Church documents on the internet:

Haha, funny how you say this as you are ON THE INTERNET. 😉
Oh don’t fret dear; I won’t be for long ;), my cancer has numbered my final days to less than two months. No big deal.

And of course only few can see the greater Evil on the Internet.

I think all of mankind could use a huge kick in their complacency back to reading books and forced to use horse and buggy. But hey that’s just me.

Sometimes too much secular distraction, science and technology rots the brain and removes us from adoring and praying unceasingly to God.

I’m not putting myself above you.

I’m as great or greater a sinner than most.
Again nothing to brag about.

Your here as I am to learn to be a better practicing Catholic like most on this site.

What this site needs most no matter what esteemed position any member purports to be is far greater Charity which is greatly lacking on this CAF site.

I’ll be the first to judge myself guilty here.

This Post is my last on this site.

There are a lot of beautiful people here at CAF. I’ve made some special friends here.

I’m thankful the respectable Moderators have put up with my ramblings this long.

I think in wisdom its best I move on these days and contemplate my final days and speaking to my priestly spiritual director.

Debra; if I have said anything in these threads to make you feel ill will of me I sincerely apologize.

Wishing you all Gods blessings

Fraternally Yours In Christ

Chris

Goodbye.

No.
People view porn because they want to see it. Without the internet they would just find another way to jack off.
There are some cons to the internet, like relationships becoming more ‘virtual’, but the pros outweigh this. We can transfer and store information and knowledge faster than ever before, advancing science and social liberty (just look at what’s going on in the Middle East)!
