Strive After Virtue

[tonyg]

Let your hearts not be filled with dissipation
Weigh you down and fill your life with cares
Unless you spend time striving after virtues
This life will tie you down with all its snares

You have the strength to grow
You have the power to say no
You need to watch all the time
You need to pray and to climb
Virtues are dwelling within you

Bigger things are out there that await you
The choice has been given freely to choose
Escape all the madness go out find a place
Strive and allow your virtues to breakthrough

You have the strength to grow
You have many seeds to sow
You have mountains to climb
So keep praying all the time
Unlock the virtues within you
You have the strength, I know
Remember I have told you so
Out of love I gave them all to you

This is a beautiful poem TonyG…did you write it?
Here is one of mine:

Be like the Moon
©1969 Mark Townsend

When troubled darkness closes in,
Look up beyond the heads of men,
Into the night! Black sky above!
Into that pale, soft face of love!

Be like the Moon and crowd the stars
-guiltless smiling face of scars.
Arise Humanity, and explore Creation!
But first you must get to Lunar Station!

In unstirred silence, quietude,
Serene composure, gentle mood,
Be like the Moon, whose light is cool,
Sweetly glowing, distant jewel.

Behind a cloud, or hid at day,
I thought that Luna’d lost her way;
But ‘tis me got lost below the clouds.
From Terra come monthly shadow shrouds.

No, the Man-in-the-Moon will never stray,
Even when we’re turned away.
Splendid orb from silver crescent,
Darkness mending, ever-present.

Who lifts the lovers’ eyes from pride?
Day in, day out, who turns the tide?
When has the Moon e’er shouted back?
What is there calm assurance lacks?

So, when your little quarrels die,
Look humbly up’t the nocturnal sky.
Whisper vows of peace, and smile too,
For there is nothing that can rile you.

Be like the Moon and sit quite still,
Subject to the divine Will.
When sadness comes and lights are small,
Be like the Moon, and smile on all.

Thank you, yes I wrote it. Your poem is well written and very clever. Peace

This is a good and encouraging poem. It is very Catholic–only Catholics seem to talk about virtues.

That’s very beautiful and encouraging, Tony. God’s given you a talent for sure.

WISDOM OF SOLOMON! :dancing:

The Wisdom of Solomon describes the necessity and glory of seeking after virtue in magnificent terms. So does Proverbs, to a somewhat lesser extent. It’s glorious! This is so Catholic and so magnificent. I love it. It’s present in many parts of Protestantism too, but there is nowhere near the precisely clear understanding of sin, attachment to the world, and severing oneself from them. Oh, how beautiful is the Communion of Saints! :extrahappy:

GREAT POEMS, guys! Keep seeking virtue!

only Catholics seem to talk about virtues? :nope:

Q.‘What is the purpose of our lives?’
A.‘Abdu’l-Bahá. –‘To acquire virtues!’

For a long time now, I have been assiduously gathering passages from our Writings, in which partiular virtues are given prominence. It appears, when they are assembled together, that you have a sparkling jewel, and each facet has its own special secret!

He that is unjust in his judgment is destitute of the characteristics that distinguish man’s station.

Love is, in reality, the first effulgence of Divinity and the greatest splendor of God.

The best of perfections is immaculacy and the freeing of oneself from every defect.

Above all else, the greatest gift and the most wondrous blessing hath ever been and will continue to be Wisdom.

The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice.

I admonish you to observe courtesy, for above all else it is the prince of virtues.

Truthfulness is the foundation of all the virtues of the world of humanity.

Indeed thy Lord loveth fidelity as found in the realm of creation, and He hath given it precedence over most of the praiseworthy qualities.

He, verily, shall increase the reward of them that endure with patience.
