Strong homily against abortion

The deacon gave a strong homily against abortion today. Except for the homilies, my parish is a generally traditional. It was a refreshing change from the bland non-confrontational food we normally get.

We need more religious who love the unborn the way he does. Hopefully it struck a cord with many in your parish.

Sometimes I feel like going out on the street preaching myself. It’s good we still have such deacons.

In our diocese, because our priests either by choice or by inability to find the time, have handed over evangelization to our deacons. Our deacons then are challenged to do it from the pulpit. They in my opinion know us better than our priests and do a much better homily about the biblical reasons why we need to make good moral judgments, rather than wishy washy ones.

My husband gave a homily on the importance of standing up for a culture of life the Sunday right before the elections. As part of the homily he told the story of our daughter whom the doctors advised me to abort because she was going to be born so mentally and physically handicapped. Today, our daughter is pursuing her Ph.D. in molecular biology at an ivy league university - shows you how much some people know One person stormed out of the church and sent our pastor an email asking him to speak to that “misguided” man. Another lady talked venomously with him on her way out of the church. Aside from those two at least 50 people came up to him and thanked him for preaching that homily. :yup:

Sounds like what happened at my parish, and it was one of the deacons, too. The pastor had to tell him to tone it down, not go there anymore. Unfortunately the few people who got angry are the ones who are the biggest donors…so the other 20 people who liked it didn’t count for much. I didn’t know all this until the deacon’s wife told me–I must have missed that Mass It went a long way to explain why the homilies are usually so innocuous. I could guess, but now I know…
