I have been immersed in Christian teachings pretty much all of my life and only recently became catholic.

I struggle with the concept of the lose of salvation a as that is a new concept that I have never in the history of my teaching had to confront before.

I find myself struggling with things that probably aren’t even bad but question weather I have done enough to stay in Gods graces.

I know all the answers of mortal sins such as they have to be intentional, of a grievous nature, and in full awareness. I also know that separation from Gods love is not something necessarily easy to do.

Most recently I play a game which includes magic (I don’t believe in the use of magic or that I am trying to do it myself just a part of the game). I despite having been told by almost every single person that it’s just pretend and not really bad, and even gotten my deacon involved who said it should be fine I can’t shake the feeling of am I breaking a mortal sin.

I was fully prepared to stop playing if the deacon had said yes that is wrong, so I believe the true struggle is that I am struggling with perhaps relying on the full grace of God? Does anyone have any advice on someone dealing with the new concept of mortal sins and trying to do everything possible to maintain oneself in Gods Grace with taking away from Gods Grace by “earning it” by following everything to the letter

While the commandments are good guidelines, and we’re still required to keep them under the New Covenant, they are not exhaustive. And while it’s healthy to examine our consciences you can drive yourself crazy questioning and dwelling on every little act. The most basic way of determining whether or not something is sinful is to consider whether or not it opposes love of God and/or neighbor-as well as whether or not it’s harmful to ourselves. Persistent mortal sin is said to destroy love in us and therefore naturally separates us from God all over again.
