I’ve been recently struggling with using social media. I saw facebook gave donations to planned parenthood and was not very nice to Priests Deacons about keeping their prefix before their name. However I use it to show my family to my family that is all over the world. I was wondering what everyone’s thoughts were on this subject. I don’t want to support anything that spoiled 26 year old stands for. I also don’t want to lose touch with everyone.

Use it for what you wish…simply do not play the games or click upon the ads…

I drastically pruned my friends list, I use the “ignore” function liberally, and I installed the “FB Purity” extension to automatically filter ads, features and topics I have no desire to see.

So, basically, FB is me sharing cute pictures of my kids with my relatives, and I never even see the other garbage. Sometimes I’ll post a prayer or some other small method of evangelizing (and most of my family is not Catholic).

Social media can be a very effective tool when used appropriately.

FB purity extension? What is that, if you don’t mind explaining to a software-illiterate person?

My thoughts are I don’t use face book. My mentality if I can’t find time to call, write (snail mail or email) then we are not close enough that it is worth it to keep in touch. Not a popular opinion but nonetheless you asked for my thoughts. A friendship needs to have some warmth behind it, not the coldness of FB

Basically, you can install it and add it on to your browser (I’m not sure which ones it’s compatible with, but we use Chrome - other browsers are Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, among others). It runs automatically, but you determine the settings. So when you load Facebook after installing it, you will get a little window in the browser asking you for your settings. You can turn off things like the “Trending Topics” box, game and app notifications, and determine the type of posts you see from friends. One of my favorite parts though is the text filter - I can type in words I don’t want to see from posts from anybody on my friends list. (I use it primarily to filter out posts hawking products from those “home-based businesses” i.e. pyramid schemes.)

After you set your initial settings, you can change them at any time by clicking the “FBP” link at the top right of the page on Facebook.

I love it and it has made Facebook a lot more fun for me. I could quit it, but I’d kiss most of my communication with my siblings and parents goodbye. I don’t love that it’s a primary method of keeping in touch with them, but I’d rather keep in touch than not, so, I use the medium they’re willing to use. Just on my terms. 😉

Thank you! I have been off of Facebook for about two months because I got tired of the garbage. But my family keeps asking if I had seen their recent posts, because they had occasionally posted something with me in mind. So I could really use a way to filter out the junk and enjoy only the good stuff I want to see.

Thank you as well…I did not realize such a thing was possible…

I’m probably one of the few who is not on FB. I won’t use it. However I am on other social media sites.

I don’t like FB for many reasons. It causes a lot of problems, people feel depressed from looking at other people’s sepia-enhanced pictures of happiness. I like the quiet of Google+. I’m glad it’s not as popular as FB - that’s what makes it so great IMO.

We are a no FB family. If people care about me, they can call or write. I have seen too many fights over postings.

I use Twitter to tweet during Notre Dame football games. That’s the extent of my social media outlet.
