Hi everyone, so I am a relapsed catholic, currently trying to validate our marriage (working with a priest and going to church weekly to show we are devoted). Anyway, since I have come back to the church, my anxiety seems to have gone through the roof. I feel like no matter what I do, I am not good enough and will go to hell if I die. I don’t know that when I am praying, I am sincere enough, or that my sins are being forgiven. I worry constantly about my husband’s well being as well, and pray for him. I worry about the state of the world, and pray, but oftentimes feel like my prayers are not being heard or that they are so minimal to God they are almost pointless. I am never sure if I am sinning, or if my sins are forgiven. Ultimately I am afraid of dying because I am afraid of what will become of me. I am pregnant with a baby and am worried that when I sin or act badly, God will punish me by taking her away from me (this is on account of a dream I had). Some days I go almost all day without eating because I can’t stop worrying. I have talked to Doctors and even a priest and they don’t seem to fully understand where I am coming from. I pray the rosary everyday and still feel like I am not doing enough. I don’t know what to do at this point, has anyone else had issues like this or is having them currently?

So you are experiencing a phobic state now. From what you write it seems that you believe it is uncontrollable. Is that so? If so, when psychological counsel may be sought. Certainly no health practitioners understand completely, how could that be possible?

God gives us all actual graces, even before baptism. Each one can cooperate with Gods grace and resist sin when tempted, but if sin is chosen, absolution is available with through the Church (for the baptized), with repentance and with sorrow, and even with imperfect contrition.

When you pray, do you pray for others?

When I pray it is mostly for my husband, daughter and family (mom and dad). But I also pray for victims of war, persecuted Christians, souls in purgatory, etc.

You are Moses on the mountain, seeing only the cloud, with God in the cloud (however unseen).

You are an inspiration to me.

The evil one gets busy when he sees Christ’s Light coming into your family.

God bless you richly…and may Our Holy Blessed Mother put her mantle of protection around you!

The worst thing to tell a person who worries a lot is to not to worry.

First, it is not pointless. The challenge is that we often will not see the fruits of our prayer and we are conditioned by society that “success” means results. No results or change means failure. I know this will offend some people, but sometimes the story of the saints and miracles are not always inspiration of faith but can be misused or misinterpreted as measurements of our faith. Unless we experience that St. Paul moment or thanks to Hollywood the Cecile B DeMille spectacular our faith life is somehow lacking.

Second, I would suggest that your prayers include moments of thanksgiving if they all ready do not. You have so much to be grateful for – a child, going back to church, working on your marriage,. etc. Counting your blessings may sound like a trite cliché but it can change your perspective and giving you balance.

I hope this helps.

Could you have some pregnancy hormones on top of everything? My hormones were all over the place when I was pregnant.

You are under stress from every angle and you have many symptoms of spiritual burnout. Sadly when I get this state, I get under a spiritual “attack” as it seems to me.

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. - 1 Corn 14:33

God is a loving peaceful God. I have extreme anxiety and my husband/parents remind me of this fact when I’m having a panic attack. Not eating during the day could be aggravating this too since you’re eating for 2 now.

I was EXTREMELY anxious when pregnant, and it felt like the world was ending for me.

I hope you get feeling better and I’m praying for you!

Kat

In my experience, what you are going through is not uncommon when people start or resume living a Catholic life. I have seen two main reasons: the new person wants to do the right thing and is not yet clear about how to do that, and two, spiritual attacks, because the demons hate to see sinners change their lives.

Whatever the source, trusting God is the cure. When these bad thoughts come–any thoughts which make you feel anxious or worried, pray to God, to Mary, and to the Archangel Michael. Keep doing this until the thoughts go away. Do it again when the thoughts return.

After a time, the thoughts will go away but after a period of peace, different anxiety-provoking thoughts will come! Do not be fooled–these are from the same source and have the same cure.

Receiving the graces of Confession is extremely helpful, so go to Confession as close to once a week as possible.

If you are avoiding mortal sin and confessing when you fall into mortal sin, and doing your best to avoid venial sin, you are doing well. Mortal sin is very clear-cut, requiring 1. grave matter, 2. full knowledge, and 3. full consent.

The fact that sinful thoughts assail you does not mean you are sinning as long as you resist the thoughts and do not consent!
I don’t know that when I am praying, I am sincere enough,
You have decided to pray and are praying. That is what counts, not your feelings, which are not fully under your control. Decide, pray, *peacefully *return your mind when you find you are distracted, and you will be fine.
or that my sins are being forgiven.
If the priest absolves your sins, your sins are forgiven. You absolutely do not need to worry about this at all, because if the priest does not ask for clarification, you have been clear enough, etc. This is his responsibility, not yours, so consider all your sins forgiven.

St Ignatius (iirc) says to gve only a few minutes (like 5 at most) to the examination of conscience. I have found this to be very helpful, and also restrict my examinations if conscience to particular times

The only problem is when someone *deliberately *(Very Deliberateky!!! Not just forgetting!!!) conceals a mortal sin. Then that and all subsequent confessions are invalid and need to be re-done, including the sins of sacrilege wrt Confession and Communion. Do not worry about any confessions from your childhood.
I worry constantly about my husband’s well being as well, and pray for him.
Praying about whatever you are worried about is good 🙂 Once you pray about it, leave it in God’s hands 🙂
I worry about the state of the world, and pray, but oftentimes feel like my prayers are not being heard or that they are so minimal to God they are almost pointless.
If your child asked for something, would you ignore her or think she was minimal? Of course not. Remember that God loves each of us more than we can even possibly love, and that He totally loves you, His returning prodigal child, and runs out to meet you.
I am never sure if I am sinning, or if my sins are forgiven. Ultimately I am afraid of dying because I am afraid of what will become of me. I am pregnant with a baby and am worried that when I sin or act badly, God will punish me by taking her away from me (this is on account of a dream I had).
You seem to be trying not to sin. It is really dfficult to sin when you are working hard at avoiding sin. God knows that you are learning, just as parents understand that their children are learning.
Some days I go almost all day without eating because I can’t stop worrying.
This is too much worrying, and if you can’t overcome it by spiritual means, you may need to discuss it with your doctor. You must eat if only for the sake if your baby!

When you eat, thank God for the healthy food He provides you and your baby. God has given you this baby to take care of, so eat whether you want to or not.
I have talked to Doctors and even a priest and they don’t seem to fully understand where I am coming from. I pray the rosary everyday and still feel like I am not doing enough. I don’t know what to do at this point, has anyone else had issues like this or is having them currently?
A lot of Catholics start out praying their morning prayers (Offering, Guardian Angel Prayer), Rosary, and Evening Prayer, with 10 to 20 minutes of spiritual reading during the day, later adding meditation.

The saints agree that *justice *requires 15 minutes of prayer each day, and the rest is charity, done for love of God. However, an important point is that we must fulfill the duties of our state in life. As mothers, our state in life requires that we care for our children and not let other things, even prayer! interfere with that. (For example, if you are praying the Rosary and your child needs you, then you stop praying and take care of your child)

So for mothers of young children, sometimes their prayers consist of the morning prayer said while the child is eating; a Rosary said while the children sleep; evening prayers as one drifts to sleep. What really helped me a lot was to have Catholic radio on for a while each day–i didn’t hear very much!!! but each day I would pick up a little something.

Prayers for you!

Annie

St Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls—Amen.

ellam25,
I’ve observed that sometimes when people make their way to a new tradition or as time goes on in any given tradition that they can feel many of the emotions and doubts that you are experiencing. In Buddhism (I’m not Buddhist so please forgive if I am wrong on any point) there are 5 hindrances to enlightenment. I believe enlightenment can be likened to salvation in Christianity.
The fifth hindrance is doubt. This doubt can be about many things but I think that it is meant doubt of the benefits of the practice Buddhism or following the dhamma(teachings).
This I believe is true of any tradition that we profess to follow. If we doubt or have little faith in the practice there is little or no progress. So have faith in the practice you have chosen. Be well.
