I think, in a way, that it can be a journey (to use that hackneyed image).
First, I think “oh, these songs are nice. They’re tugging on my heartstrings”. Then, I think “wait, I thought Catholics had Gregorian chant, and hundreds of years of music by the greatest composers”. Then I think “are we supposed to have our heartstrings tugged on, and nothing else? And why the bongos and guitars?”
Then, we realize what the documents of Vatican II actually call for, and we’re mad as heck that we’re being ripped off from our heritage of Catholic culture!
Then at some point the anger fades away, and we obediently sing the Battle hymn of the Protestant Reformation at Mass, just like I did today!
