Struggling with depression and wanting to follow God

After a while of not creating anything of my own, I started writing this advent instead of surfing the Internet. I started writing this silly, science fiction comedy and now I’m discerning God wants me to give it up because it’s too fleshly (the humor isn’t crass, but the premise isn’t exactly “high”, it’s about a Guy whose body gets turned into living cow meat and gets hunted down by the government who want to harvest him since in this story cows went extinct). It’s the first time I felt like I was writing something funny, that other people liked and found funny. It was fun, and now I feel like God wants me to leave it, which is frustrating, because it happens with every personal project I try to do as an Artist. Should I just assumed God doesn’t want me to create my own stuff because I’ll get attached to it? I feel that’s often the reason I have to give up a project, because my ego and ambition get wrapped up in it and I get attached. Basically, this whole thing has made me miserable and I wanted to ask if you could pray for me to discern God’s will and the grace to follow him in my life.
 
Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular (Maggie and her husband), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Praying for your intention. Isn’t it part of the creative process sometimes to try something and then maybe find out maybe it’s not as good an idea as we had thought? And that maybe we need to try something else? Sometimes going down the wrong road can be a great teacher. If you go down a thousand wrong roads you are just that much closer to finding the right road. When writing something can we really expect to be a success the first time we try? An art or a craft takes time to develop. Can you really blame God for that? Perhaps you are just realizing your story doesn’t work. Your story doesn’t sound particularly that interesting to me either. I am sorry, but I am just being honest. Perhaps, you should try again rather than blaming God for somehow constricting your creativity. There is great freedom within God’s Kingdom.

I had a feeling that paraphrasing the story would be a bad idea, and it really isn’t reflective of the story’s premise. The way things were going were exactly the opposite of what you describe. It seemed like everything was going pretty well. The story was funny, and I got lots of positive feedback from it. The problem I was perceiving was that while it was funny, it didn’t seem to be very transcendent in its aim. Honestly I think I’m going to talk to my spiritual director about it.

Not all art has to be transcendent though? It sounds like a fun story to me. The idea that God would want you to give it up (while possible) sounds like it might be coming from a vaguely puritan point of view. Talk to your spiritual director or priest or whoever as you said. Praying for your intention and that you would find peace in who you are as a Christian artist.

What did you think I was assuming? I wasn’t talking about the general practice of creating, I’m talking about frustration with not knowing God’s will, fear of what He’ll ask of me if I seek it out (I can’t seem to discern it properly, because in the past it’s been weird, contradictory and I realized afterwards I was deluded the whole time) and frustration with never being able to do anything on my own, even creative projects, without being asked to give it up because I become too attached to them. I know I’m in the wrong, but I am having so much difficulty with getting on the right course and staying there.
