I used to be so confident I had a purpose in spite of being physically disabled since birth. I am very intelligent and went to college for two years away from home to finish my Bachelor’s degree. I had so much hope I would be able to find a career I could do from home. That was almost two and a half years ago when I left college. In that time I had one internship (online) that turned out to be scam, and then I was editing books this summer but the company kept changing expectations and I couldn’t keep up. I feel so guilty about quitting even though my dad even said it wasn’t worth it.

Now I can’t seem to find anything. I have a speech impediment and most of the work from home jobs for people with disabilities include using the telephone, an impossibility for me. I’ve tried numerous tactics for finding work, even the state agency that helps find work for people like me doesn’t have any advice for me.

I am beginning to feel like a burden. I can’t do much physically. I do fold laundry and make menus for my mom. I drive myself crazy looking for work, and I feel guilty if I indulge in my hobbies now that I am not working. I also feel like going to college was a waste of money for my parents, though scholarships paid for more than half of it.

I’m only in my mid-20s and cannot imagine living the rest of my life like this. I realize I am looking at how society views me and not how God does, but I can’t seem to get out of this rut I am in.

yes, youd be surprised to look around at how others value themselves or feel like a burden when pursuing work or a career, no matter how bright and talented, the blues can kick in.

it would be good to accept that those feelings are normal but what is the next step? I think a good career counselor and session with an occupational therapist would be very helpful.

Really work at finding who you are and what is your calling, despite the disabilities. indulge in the hobbies because that might be where your skills and talents lie. approach these things with love, passion, and some cleverness about business. Keep a notebook. Talk with people who run their own business. what kind of service does not require perfect diction. Feel free to PM me with questions.

There is a career or many careers that await you.

Firstly and formost, you are not a burden , not to your family or anyone else,
You feel frustrated because you know you can make a worthy contribution to Society and you Family, but are held back by issues , the only thing I can suggest is try looking outside the Square ,. Things in which are not impossible to lean, like History, Astronomy,
Maybe even Political history,in which you could actually teach, you say your intelligent,
Well there are things that you could find in which to challenge yourself, like actually teaching

Because you are disabled you give others the opportunity to offer their help and to grow in charity, which is a good thing. Please don’t dwell on negative thoughts. Live each moment faithfully abandoned to divine Providence. Spend your time helping out around your parents’ house and praying rosaries for others, and you will not feel like a burden, but like a help to others. God bless you.

Thank you all for your kind words. I focused on writing in college, and I am finding a lot of the jobs require years of experience, which I cannot get if I can’t get a job. I did do some volunteer writing for someone, but he stopped responding to my inquires so I am not sure what happened. I keep looking, but I think because a lot of my experience is connected to my disability experiences, it may be working against me. I did begin blogging, so I am writing on a regular basis.

I try to remember my purpose may be to allow others to fulfill their purpose through caring for me. I just wonder why God gave me the ability to write and excel academically but not be able to use it in the broader world. It’s hard not to feel guilty getting financial assistance from the government.

We are blessed with the opportunity to travel through Europe on a vacation,
I have seen beggars in the street begging for money, some have no legs, one Man walking in a tight circle for some length of time, some sleeping in dark alley ways,
I know one thing for sure, although we have hardship of some form,
We are still blessed we are not one of these poor souls,
Praying for your needs,god bless,

Hey, I’ve been struggling in finding a job as well, also in my mid 20’s, and just broke up with my boyfriend of 8 years recently. I, too, feel like I’m a burden to my parents at times and that I can’t go on. But don’t ever give up, and you’re not a burden, I’m sure your parents love you very much, and you have Jesus who also loves you unconditionally.

Pray and let God leads the way. It’s tough now, but trust Him that every thing will get better, even it takes a day at a time. There’s always a reason behind every hardship, we may not understand now, but God knows that it’s for the better. So don’t stop hoping, pray and pray for some more, and always be grateful. Be strong and go on 🙂 I’ll pray for you.

Oh I just read this earlier:http: //www.spiritualcatholic.com/read-meditations/910-what-are-trials-for

God bless you.

If you are honestly disabled (which you are), then you should not feel guilty. Please humbly accept your circumstances and do not feel guilty any more about such things. You are even seeking out work. What more can a human being do but be humble, prayerful, grateful, trustful in God and abandoned to divine Providence. God bless you.
