Hello, I am a procrastinator.
I need to read my bible, pray the rosary, go to church today…pay bills etc…etc…

But I can’t.

for some reason there is a feeling of anxiety when I so much as think of starting a task. To avoid feeling uncomfortable, I say I will just do it tommorow…then I repeat that.

then bill collectors call so I have to do something…so I do, and it feels good, so I think…that wasn’t so bad.

But then it starts all over AHHhHH!!
I want to help the homeless, and elderly…but I will think of a million reasons why not to do it.

How do you stop this madness!!!
It makes me less of a christian.

Same problem here mate,

Have a lot of things to do.But feel like my hands are tied down. And can’t move.

I learned what procrastination meant 5 years ago.But I have been facing this problem longer than that.

I am an artist.Procrastination coupled with Artist block has really affected my career.I feel I should have achieved a lot of things a long time ago.Somethings terribly gone wrong.

Artist here. I know what you mean. Mix that with perfectionism and you’ve got a lethal combination, hah.

Ask yourself what the reason might be. Like you say, it is *not *as hard to find the energy to do things that you *have *to do. And there are a *lot *of things that we have to do! Try to figure out what might be the cause of your anxiety or lack of energy. * Could be somehow involved with family.

I think that if a bunch of us are suffering from this, it also may come from watching the bad news on the tv, from Buffalo*. That was very bad, but so also is some family problem that never is resolved.

Maybe go with the feelings … like the feeling “not to go on the computer” or “not to clean that corner of the house” and find something to do for yourself that has been sitting idle. Read that book that has been lying there for some time; look at the mending, the sewing; focus on a hobby other than the computer probably … maybe you can get something accomplished.

I went to Adoration last night and went through the readings and the Gospel was a wonder to read … Mark 7-9, the Psalms, Genesis. I also made pizza in a different way … less cheese and carmelized onions.

If the house is cleaned, then you can do these things that have been ignored. House cleaning is v. impt.

If you really feel anxious, listen to a favorite classical music station/album. Pray the rosary. Take a baby aspirin, eat less or more fruits and vegetables, take a walk. Just a variety of ideas of relaxing calming things. It should last only a day.

Sounds like fear. What are you afraid of? Every gain has a loss. What are you afraid of losing?

Is there an aspect of an “evil spirit” holding us back from acting?

Is procrastination connected to sloth or apathy?

Are there prayers to overcome this?

Not sure about ‘specific’ prayers, but prayer is always a good thing 👍

One needs to be careful, because there are folks who are legitimately, clinically depressed, or who have anxiety disorders. Medical/therapeutic treatment is in order for these folks. There are times when such conditions are mistaken for evil spirits or sinful behavior. There can also be a lot of overlap between spiritual and mental health. Even something as simple as poor diet can contribute to ‘apathy.’

I think it has to be addressed on a case-by-case basis, by qualified professionals, if it becomes very problematic in a person’s life.

I have not identified the fear…I loose more by procrastination, I would gain by being on top of things.

Today I want to go to mass, the thought automatically brings up a counter thought…“oh but I don’t have collection money”…that is a false fear because I can find money for the collection.

I need to pay my credit card bill, but I don’t want to pick up the phone. I have the money to pay it, knothing stops me…but there is a negative counter thought like…what if its passed do already…that would be terrible, so I will pay it tommorow… the smallest negative thought gets blown out of context.

I wasn’t always like this, I used to be on top of things. then I had a bad experience in my former church that broke something in my head. Now I believe in the Catholic church, but the bad experience in my old church makes me avoid doing ANYTHING!!!

However I don’t know how to fix it!!!

Having a bad church exprience can sometimes shake a person’s overall feeling of well being because church is ‘supposed’ to be a port in a storm, not the storm itself. When we experience hurt rather than healing at church, it can undermine our trust in God, in others, and in ourselves. It can also leave a person feeling depressed, because something has been lost, and loss brings grief. Symptoms of grief may include depressed feelings, anxious feelings, and a ‘disorganized’ feeling about life in general.

So, maybe you are struggling with some grief, as well as the need to rebuild trust after a bad experience. Both the process of grief and the process of trust require time. Often lots of time.

It may help to focus on the fact that, although you had a bad experience, it was not God that caused it. Also, how are you doing with forgiveness towards those who may have been involved with this bad experience? Carrying around unforgiveness can be toxic to you. Did you lose lots of friends at the other church? If so, that is more grief, and increasing your support system of good friends may help.

As far as thoughts are concerned, you have the option of countering the negative thoughts with positive ones. Don’t be afraid or ‘stuck’ over how you feel. A ‘feeling’ will not harm you. It is the choice you make in responding to the feeling that will matter. Let yourself feel anxious, and do what you need to do anyway. The feeling will eventually go away. If it returns later, do the same thing. Face it. Don’t run away from it. The more you practice this, the better you will get.

Also, try to focus more on what you HAVE done instead of what you HAVEN’T done. You are doing more than you give yourself credit for, I suspect. 🙂

Have you tried writing short lists of “Things to do Today?”

No more than six things to do each day, and it would be better to write down three.

Don’t write lists for the entire week or month. That’s too daunting.

Then just do the things on the list, and cross them off. Crossing off things on a list gives me such a thrill of accomplishment and completion that I find much more satisfying than procrastination.

Don’t fight it. you are well adapted at doing some things and not others. get some automated software to help with bill paying or a service. Some companies even take money straight out of your account and give you a discount because they know they will get paid. You could also find a spouse that is more organized and prompt. You could also read up on ADD. Not that I am implying that you have it but I do and some of the coping techniques work for procrastenation as well.

I think Cat is on the right track. There are so many things out there that we should or would like to accomplish. Start with things that need attention first. Bill paying, maybe housework, ect… Put a little time aside each day to pickup the bible or prayers and stick to it. Schedule Mass in for Sat nite or Sun am, but just make sure you go. Like Cat said above, list a few items for each day and scratch them off. Do with chores or whatever you need or want to do. Don’t make them all major things. IE, if I want to paint a room in the house, I start by preping it one day, then painting some or all the next day, then retouching and finishing on another day. Space out the big stuff. Hope that helps too…Take Care…

Oh my goodness, this is EXACTLY what I’m like, down to a Tee!! It’s such a problem 😦

When it comes to reading your Bible or praying, try abandoning all your ideas about “how” this should be done.

You picture sitting in a chair or at the Adoration Chapel studying and taking notes and praying entire Rosaries. No wonder you’re daunted.

Try this instead. Make a copy on a computer of a verse that you really like. Just one verse or maybe a few verses.

Make the copies small, post-it note sized.

Make multiple copies and post them all over your living spaces. On cupboards, in the bathroom, at work on your locker, car dashboard, in your wallet, etc.

Throughout the day, your eyes will light on this verse several times, and you will be reminded of the truths in the verse.

Hope this helps.

When it comes to prayer, try something that St. Paul did. If you read his epistles, a lot of times, he “makes mention” of people in his prayers (those are his words). So just make mention of people and situations. Say a quick. “Lord, bless my spouse” as you catch sight of your spouse. Driving to work, pray, “Lord, help the president” as you listen to the radio. At work, say, “Grant us peace.” etc.

The main reason people procrastinate is that they are perfectionists. They cannot accept anything less than perfection, and since they KNOW that their effort probably won’t be perfect, they stall about doing anything to avoid facing their own inadequacies and imperfect accomplishments.

For this reason, you need to try to whittle down various tasks into smaller tasks that you can complete with some degree of proficiency . ANYONE can pray, “Bless the boss.” That’s a perfect prayer. ANYONE can read one verse hanging from the dash board while you’re sitting at a traffic light. That’s a perfect reading of the Holy Bible. See, you’ve done a perfect job. Now just keep doing these perfect “little” jobs. You don’t have to put things off anymore!

Eventually you will learn to do bigger tasks and accept imperfections in your work.

Making lists works when I’m heading into Easter or Christmas. Just at the time when we are sometimes told to throw away our to-do lists!

Some things can’t go on a list:

I want to tell a story: We live at the end of a sewer line. Now, when the toilet doesn’t flush well, the problem could exacerbate: We can actually have the sewer back-up into our basement. New to me! So, how long does it take for us to figure this out, how can it be prevented, who to call, etc.!

We find that if nothing is done immediately, the situation can escalate into something rather terrible.

First time, in denial. Didn’t call the city maintenance even. “Just a hard rain coming in back basement door.”

Second time, a discussion ensued about the cause: historical precedence was mentioned (nothing like this in 50 years.) Still some denial, could it be just water? City maintenance called and responded. Told by them that it is difficult to determine after the fact … it wasn’t. City Hall doesn’t respond though, we are in this alone.

Third time, the situation was caught as it happened still a serious mess. Family was called, opinion sought. Blame put on city maintenance - non existant? City Hall called - left message, so, police called maintenance because it was a holiday. It was Christmas Eve, in fact!

Fourth time, caught at the start despite ignoring a red flag by household member. Paid for a professional who found a a palmful of hair-like roots. City maintenance in denial; this time, they are we think. We had stopped our water usage as soon as we caught the overflow, to ameliorate the situation.

Fifth time, red flag cited by woman of the house, not ignored and the city is called immediately. All water activity is ceased until the city maintenance check. A major blockage found and cleared. (Roto-router not called for advice, per usual, we tell the city about our innocence.) We were able to have a day of high water usage, despite snow melt and rain, high flood levels elsewhere in NW OH.

Procrastination by ourselves, one might ask, where? One simply needs to think, discuss, get a head of things. It could be something involving one’s children. Can you see the red flags, do you know how to get help, does one have to wait until the situation is extremely unbearable, when one’s soul is endangered, perhaps.

(Our city *is *seeking money to update the sewers: They want to separate them and they want to have electronic monitoring of the flow. After 50 years of never having this situation with the city: We will need to be watchful in order to ameliate it and to call immediately. I know this is small compared to NOLA, or even local flooding in cities with rivers.)
