I am still having trouble ridding my porn addiction. I realize that I’m still attached to my mental fantasies that are severely numbing me like a frog slowly being boiled alive. Between weekly confessions, I also notice that my effort to repent against the sin wanes over the week. If I’ve fallen earlier in the week, I feel like I’ve given up on the battle and my tendency to repeat increases. How do I keep resisting or running away from these fantasies, so I can remain pure and congruent with my values?

You should pray the Rosary. It is good to help overcome vice etc

Rosary! Daily if possible!

I’m not kidding. If I miss a day, the next day will be harder. It carries grace!

Keep asking God for help when you pray. He will help you overcome the addiction. Sometimes it takes more time than we would like, but He does answer this type of prayer. Good luck.:signofcross:

Praying the rosary is something each of us should do and I completely agree that it brings grace into our lives. However, overcoming an addiction of any sort requires a person to tap into the proven strategies that God has provided through many different avenues. Without certain details there are several generic suggestions that can be quite successful. First, and you seem to have done this, realize your problem and seek God’s help. Second, remove what causes the issues (magazines, videos, computer, etc.) from your access. Third, seek a program that helps people overcome addiction, they are very helpful and in many areas. Fourth, commit to change and seek help from those around you to help you change. And, lastly, have your rosary in your pocket at all times, when your urges come over you make yourself pray the rosary before you allow yourself to do anything else. Commit to a strategy to change and pray for God to help.

avoid the near occasions of sin. if you watch porn on the internet, don’t even turn on the computer. once you place yourself in the vicinity of porn, you will give in. don’t even get close to it.

Pray the rosary, pray this before you start:

And his mercy is on those who fear him
from generation to generation.

Pray to Jesus and Saint Raphael, lovers of chastity. Try a devotion to Saint Thomas Aquinas the the Angelic Warfare Confraternity, look them up on the internet and order their pamphlet called 15 Hail Marys with petitions for chastity.

Fear the Lord!

make sure you are confessing correctly, say you firmly resolve with the help of God’s grace to sin no more and avoid the near occasions of sin. Throw out anything related to your problem.

These are all great suggestions for spiritual discipline. However they are just a start and not magic bullets. Dealing with lust will require a conversion of the heart, you can go directly to the Gospel for that.

The virtue of purity requires repeated practice. That’s what the virtue of purity is…the repeated practice of it. That doesn’t mean throwing prayer at it and expecting lust to disappear. You need a plan. Goals. Routines. Accountability. Support. You will have to include other people in this plan, that’s step number one, to admit that help is required.
If you were trying complete a marathon, would you just pray and then go out and run it? No. You would pray and have a plan. You would pray and set goals, have a schedule, listen to coaches and teammates, run laps, be persistent when you fail but expect to win. It’s turning your whole life over to Christ.

If this is how we approach a marathon, why would pursuing the virtue of purity require anything less? It requires conversion. If you are addicted (sounds like it) it will require suffering to allow
God to reform you. Your corrupted will is not going to go quietly. Prepare yourself for a long battle, but it is worth it. This struggle is a blessing if you suffer it with Christ.
The impurity addiction support group on this site is a good place to start.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. 🙂 I will definitely keep my rosary close, not just for me, but for others who struggle. I will have more contact with my accountability partner, and I am also trying to get into SA. I will refer to this page for any more suggestions and devotionals. Thank you and God bless you on your travels.

Hello, I am also someone who struggles with this temptation but can say am on the sure path to recovery (bumpy road). I would like the recommend this website if you believe you may be dealing with a potential addiction or addiction itself. This, with our faith and Sacraments has worked very well for me (I am still working but seeing massive improvement). Through prayer, I was led to this website and I believe it is my obligation to pass this on to anyone who is in need of it. I believe it to be the same as asking God to help cure a disease but also recieving treatment from a doctor. Feel free to check it out. candeobehaviorchange.com/ My prayers are with you.

Praying the rosary is great advice. I pray the rosary most days along with the Little Office. I still fall often (more than I care to admit here) but I don’t doubt that Our Lady is able to help me more effectively because of these devotions.

I would add that daily reception of the Holy Eucharist and regular Eucharistic Adoration are also very helpful. The tricky part is resisting temptations to fall prior to receiving Our Blessed Lord in the Holy Eucharist. But if you can resist the temptations until then, I’ve noticed that afterwards I feel much better and the temptations often disappear entirely. This doesn’t mean that this will always happen and sometimes I actually feel more tempted afterwards, but the Holy Eucharist gives us strength since it is Christ’s very Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Eucharistic Adoration is also a big help. We spend hours and hours gazing lustfully at the flesh of others. These sinful images unfortunately get etched into our minds. One effective solution is to gaze on Our Blessed Lord. Slowly but surely this will help to cleanse our minds and reorient ourselves so that Christ is our focus and not lust.

I also overcame this, although I fall down occassionally. i didnt realise how much of an addict I was until I got further away from it. One thing I think is to not just avoid but replace. INstead of focusing on NOT giving in to your addiction, focus on something productive. The rosary is definitely a powerful tool, pray it daily. Also there is software available which will limit your access to these websites. Give the code to someone else you trust. Its like football practice, I didnt want to go but once it was over and I was on track a few weeks later, was so glad I did. Finally look at other hobbies and really committ to it. Truthfully life is better as you come out of the haze that is addiction, as well as sin. Your empowering yourself. The clearer you get the better you feel. Finally get comfortable with silence. Our lives are so overwhelemd with stimuli, its often hard to just sit and enjoy. Thats really good prayer time 🙂

St_Hilary:
cONFESSION WILL TAKE THE SIN AWAY, BUT THIS IS NOT THE REMEDY FOR YOUR ADDICTION. YOU WILL NEED PROFESSIONAL HELP IN THIS AREA AND SOMETIIMES, PPRIIESTS ARE NOT TRAINED.

DID YOU KNOW AFTER CONFESSING YOUR SINS, WHENN YOU DIE YOU WILL HAVE TO SUFFER THE PUNISHMENT DUE TOO THESE. CONFESSION ONLHY TAKES THE GUILT AWAY.

BY USING A PLENanry indulgence, this takes punishment away from your sins.

God bless you.

Here is a website that can help.

You and me both. Keep in mind it’s a process. If you are like me, I grew up with porn. From puberty on I always had access to the stuff. It takes years to overcome the addiction. I find just watching most television is distracting: a guy can’t even watch the weather report without a blond in a skin tight dress on my screen shaking her chest at me. Anyway, you have to keep mindful that temptation is rife in the secular world and we have to avoid situations that will tempt us (like the weather report!). Wow, even at church you see some very poorly dressed young women. I try to sit in the front, so as not to be distracted. That has it’s downsides too: you get hit with all incese and old people smell. Anyway, this is the cross we modern American Catholic men, must bear.

I know it is easy to say, put if you can, simply stay away ferom it.

If you keep oon viewing these detractions and think you can do it and go to confession and be forgiveen, you are abusing the sacrament of confession because if you are tryly sorry you would not perform these acts. It is not like aa game: well i can have fun this week and than go to congfession.

God bless you
