I am an 18 year old from Montana and i am considering a vocation as a priest. I am having trouble though…i have some problems with OCD and i tend to ask the Lord for forgivness excessively…i feel unworthy sometimes and i really need advice and prayer from some good people…and my sins i need help facing them and how to do that please help me

On the spiritual end of things, find a good regular confessor (who might also do spiritual direction) who you can trust to guide you appropriately and get you through the painful scourge of scrupulosity.

On the phychological/emotional end, consider finding appropriate services which may help you to deal with the OCD if it is sufficiently serious enough that this must also be pursued.

I can’t stress the importance of getting a good spiritual director. Many seminaries offer also a discernment/information retreat for young men who are considering a vocation to the priesthood. Contact your pastor and hopefully he will be able to direct you to the person in charge of vocation formation in your diocese. Or you can contact a specific order like the Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans, Passionists…etc and they too will help you. Mention your concern about OCD and they can offer much help in this journey of your life.May God bless you! And with all things, pray. I will add you to my prayer list as well.😉

Feeling unworthy is a good thing. I’ve yet to meet a good priest who feels worthy of his vocation. A vocation is a gift from God- we do not earn it, we don’t do it because we know we’ll be great at it and everybody else thinks so too (I imagine priests who think like that aren’t very good ones). Sometimes when we really want something, we ask God for it- if it is His will- and sometimes it is. There are many excellent priests with much more serious problems than OCD, but it is a cross to bear and you will need to manage it if you are to be successful in following your vocation (whatever your vocation may be). Talk to a priest, and talk to your diocese’s vocation director. They will help you find your vocation.

Dear MTcatholickid,

If you are interested in the priesthood come talk to me. One of the kids at Carroll College referred me to your post.

My name is Father Dan Wathen. I am the associate at Saint Pius X in Billings.

MTCatholicKid,

Welcome to the forums. It is good to see another person from Montana around. If there is anything I can do to help you out let me know. You might want to check out the Lenten Retreats that I’ve done the past two years. 2006 2007

Bishop Warfel, our new bishop, has taken over as vocation director. He will be in Billings on Feb 23rd for a meeting with those who are feeling a call to priesthood or religious life. It might be a good chance to meet him.

Fr. Dan,

It’s good to see you here as well. I’m sure if MTCatholicKid contacts you, you’ll be a great resource.

Hi there, MTCatholicKid.

I’m 24 and filling out an application to the seminary now. I can tell you that I personally would have been able to write the very same post that you did a few years ago.

I have throughout my life struggled with OCD. I used to have it really badly, until I became a person of faith. At that point I realized that it was all nonsense and basically superstition. God was in charge, so I didn’t have to worry about that stuff.

However, the OCD really didn’t go away so much as morph into a religious sort of OCD. Instead of worrying about doing the things I’d been worried about before, now I was worried about sin and asking for mercy literally at least twice every minute. I had an evnil thought of some kind or other go through my mind, again literally, every 10 or 15 seconds. It was horrible!

The reason I’m telling you this is because with lots of work on it, asking questions as often as I could or felt the need about what was a sin, what wasn’t, etc., with lots of Confession and Communion, and ultimately with lots of events and circumstances in my life that I never would have associated with God in any way whatsoever and 90% of which I today still don’t even recognize as being anything other than day to day happenings, God brought me out of those things.

I used to worry a lot about how I might be a priest with all these problems, so I know how you are feeling. What I can tell you is that you are only 18. When I experienced these things I was 21 and 22, maybe even 23. It takes time, and maybe it even takes plain old fashioned getting older and the physiological changes and life experience that come with it, but the stuff will go away, or become very managable, if you never give up.

That’s really the greatest thing. Just never give up. God is God, after all. He will bring you through your problems to salvation for sure, and if He’s called you to be a priest then of course He’ll sure as heck give you whatever you need to go ahead and do that.

Fell free to PM me if you’d like. I’d also really suggest you do find a good solid priest to help you in whatever way they can. Just try not to expect a priest to give you some magic advice or formula that fixes all your problems just like that. Like every thing in the spiritual life, it takes time, and that time is the time that God - for whatever particular reason in any particular case - chooses for it to happen in.

So, pray to God that you’ll find that right priest, lay person, book, or anything else that’ll bring you to where He wants you, and stick with Him. He’ll take care of you. Remember how much more valuable you are than a sparrow…

Lazerlike42,

Thanks for these words. I’m sure they will be a great help. There is nothing like words of someone who has been there to be a sign of encouragement 👍
