Student Center/Church?

Hi all! I want to start by mentioning that I am scrupulous, and worry about a lot of stuff, but here goes.

I’m part of the Catholic Student Association at my college, and we have a student center on campus. As far as I can tell, the center was dedicated as a church, and weekly Mass is held here. However, it is also where our group’s weekly meetings and most other activities are held.

The building is designed as pretty much one really big room, with only a small narthex and a kitchen outside it, so there’s not anywhere else to go. I know that Canon 1210 says that only religious things are allowed in sacred places, so now I’m worrying about the morality of using the space for other activities. Am I being scrupulous? Should we not use the room for other purposes?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Basing from your description I think the room is not a chapel and does not host the Blessed Sacrament. I imagine it to be a multipurpose hall. (correct me if im wrong). So I think it would be all right to use it for other purposes. Just be sure that the sacred objects are not tampered with (if there are any inside). God bless!

You could start a petition to have the space declared a meditation room that’s what we did at my school. It was started by Muslim students who needed a place to pray and it turned into an interfaith movement that was successful. The school set aside a meditation room.

It’s definitely used as a multipurpose hall, but in the narthex there’s a certificate from the Pope blessing the center at its dedication. I was under the impression that only churches and cemeteries could be dedicated. Hence my confusion. Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut!
