I started another thread forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?p=7838085#post7838085 and normally I wouldn’t make another thread but I hope that it is okay to ask this here as well; I have to make a decision in a short time so I want all the help that I can get…

Please help! This is a bit of a weird question, but I’m scrupulous so I’m asking it. I’m a college student and I’m going to be choosing my dorm room for next year in a couple of hours. The rooms are not coed but I will probably have a choice between a coed floor (bathrooms shouldn’t be shared, but the hallways will, I suppose) and a male-only floor. Provided that I have a choice, should I choose the male-only floor, or are they morally equivalent? I suppose that it probably doesn’t matter but I wanted to ask to be sure…

Thanks in advance for answering such a weird question.

In the Peace of Christ,

Unfortunately, a male-only floor won’t mean that there won’t be women in the halls at all hours. A co-ed floor with separate bathrooms isn’t objectively less moral than an all-male floor, but I would choose the single sex floor. You may see women on an all-male floor, but on a shared floor you know you will see women going in and outas they get ready for bed, etc.

The bigger question would be your roommate(s). Will you be able to set good ground rules with him about when and for how long women can visit in your room?

Actually, I’ll probably be getting a single 🙂
And I got into a dorm called the Health and Wellness dorm, so no alchohol or drugs are allowed 🙂

I currently live on a coed floor in a much worse dorm (I’ve seen girls in the guys’ bathroom:eek:). To tell the truth, I’d rather live on a coed floor; I get along better with girls than guys in general, I guess I’m the “friend” type of guy… and I try my best to keep myself from lusty thoughts (not that I always succeed), but…

So, if it’s not objectively less moral, I think I may choose the coed one…

It’s actually a better idea than you think. You can open your doors, have video game sessions till early morning, talk about football, have heavy metal blasting-all that jazz.

I went to a school that had strict “Boy/Girl” rules. At first, it was a pain, but as time moved on it was quite fun if you were single, which at the time I was. We used to have 007 Goldeneye N64 fests while blasting Metallica till the early morning.

Which is better, the all male dorm? Except honestly, I’d rather learn how to knit than watch football…😛 I’m so unmanly…

Hey girls like metal too 😛

Congrats on the dorm you got, OP.

Did we go to school together? 😛 I also had late night N64 Goldeneye fests while blasting heavy metal music. My bro and I were the only ones on the floor of our dorm with a video game console, so everyone else had to put up with our choice in music. 😃 I spent so many, many hours playing that game… :o

In regards to the OP’s question, I’m not sure there’s an objective one-size-fits-all answer to your moral dillema. Since you’re already in college, you no doubt do not need to be told what can go on in some dorms. The fact that you’re in a drug and alcohol free dorm should mean that most of the people there will be of a different sort (though, of course, many might not be there voluntarily).

I get what you’re saying about preferring to be around girls. I unknowingly picked up some pretty gross habits my first semester at college because I was around only coarse guys for 95% of the time. On my first visit back home, I was out with one of my female friends and I – without even thinking twice about it – burped very loudly. She immediately said “Excuse you!” I was so embarassed. 😊 I would have never done that before. From then on, I was much more aware of the need to deliberately avoid picking up certain unsavory habits. It most certainly is not good for man to be alone!

But there are many temptations against purity in seeing women walking down the hall in towels or what-have-you. If it were me, I would choose the all guys floor, but make a conscious effort to make female friends. You can still have lots of female friends without living right there with them.

In the Peace of Christ,
Is it a conservative or religious college? I went to a school that was quite liberal, and I lived in a dorm room for two years. One year, I would not say there was much difference as to whether it was single sex or coed. But the second year there was a nudity kick. Some people just decided, “why cover up? this is my home.” I saw more nudity among males than females, but once the ice was broken and the weather was warm, you pretty much were not surprised if you encountered someone male or female with almost no clothes on, and sometimes completely naked and not attempting at all to cover up.

It hasn’t been that bad yet. It’s Trinity College in Hartford, not exactly a defender of traditional values…

To everyone:

Because it is a non-alchoholic and no drug dorm, I thought it would be an okay place.
I just wanted to let everyone know that I had to decide at a litte after 2:00 today, and I chose to live on one of the coed floors, close to the men’s bathroom. Two girls that I know are in my vicinity are nice people and usually dress fairly modstly, which I think would be not too strange in this dorm.

Just wanted to give you all an update. And thank you so much for all your thoughts!

Um…so what? Oh no, you see women walking in the halls. The horror!

You’re gonna see them outside the dorms too, so why does it matter?

Sounds good. I ve lived in co-ed dorms, and tbh girls are more likely to be covered up more than usual if they know there are guys around. You always get those that are just too comfortable walking around naked, but its not the majority and if you cannot avoid those types, just know that you yourself have not done anything wrong.

My parents are nudists, so it was not that big of a deal to me. A lot depends on what you are accustomed to.
