Student received a book of mormon

Hey,
A grade 6 student of mine in the catechism class I am helping out in was telling me about this book someone gave him. Well, yesterday he brought it in and it is a book of mormon with a note inside from the persons who gave it to him.

I told him that i didn’t recommend he read the book, but read his bible instead. I would like to give him some information about Joseph Smith and the mormon church (from a Catholic perspective) at a level that a grade 6 would understand. I think the text at catholic.com may be too advanced.

Any links or help would be appreciated.

Tell him the Book of Mormons was lifted from other scriptures and that he shouldn’t dabble in the Church of Latter-Day Saints because they don’t believe in the Trinity and they think black people are inferior to white people. (Show him Journal of Discourses, 7:290).

Or you can tell him to read the book and tell you what he thought. First of all, a grade 6 student might not understand it. Second, they would most likely enjoy the war stories.

I am not in favor of people influencing our youth in what to read and in not what to read. What about Harry Potter? A certain segment of the catholic church considers it from satan. Would you encougage him to read Harry Potter?

Mormons will argue that revelation is ongoing, but what they won’t tell you is that Mr. Young considered his sermons to be scripture:
I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of man, that they may not call Scripture (ibid., 13:95).

Holocaust is history. Trinity is God. Both are important to understand but certainly an understanding of God is foundational and thus more important.

Denying the history of the holocaust is not doctrinal. Mormon denial of the Trinity is.

This is not comparable.

Not to mention, holocaust denial crosses all religions. There are Mormons who believe this nonsense. You have no point other than an opportunity to air your grievances against a Catholic who is part of an organization that is not in communion.

Your arguments won’t help you steer DiggidyDog away from the truth, nor will they help you confuse me.

I am not in favor of people working at pulling Catholic children away from their faith.

I don’t know of any resources for a child that are specific to Joseph Smith. However, Smith is comparable to any other man who has taken to his own ideas and interpretations of scriptures and built a religion on top of these ideas. Do you have resources for this?
 
I would commend him to the instruction of his parents and stay not seek to instruct the young man without his parents (name removed by moderator)ut.
 
I doubt a 6th grader will get through it. It’s not exactly riveting reading. Just my feeling.

But aside from that I would explain that the book is felt to be scripture, like the Bible, to a specific group of people like the Mormons, as the Qur’an is felt to be scripture by the Muslims. I would explain that it was written by someone named Joseph Smith who claimed to be a prophet, like many people during his time were claiming to be prophets and creating religious works like Mary Baker Eddy. I would explain that although the Mormons are wrong on this point, as the canon was closed with the Bible, his friend meant well and simply wanted to share what he believes.
 
Those guys are very artful !
They are very polite and delicate.
What I like from them that they speak the language of the country where they preach.
And they speak it very good .
Its a good sign of the respect to the country where they temporary live.
Also , they teach English for free. And free English it is very rare project in our days.
It is known that English is the language which speedily conquers the world , so the majority of the converted people are the ones who came to study free English.
I personally wouldn’t advise to give them your phone numbers , better to take from them their phone numbers .
Otherwise , they are going to call you continuously , during the long time and if you are not experienced or well-versed Christian , then its not easy to talk with them .

DiggidyDog is a CCD teacher, meaning the kid’s parents have vested their trust in Diggidy to catechize their child. It is therefore D’s duty to teach the child why the BOM is incorrect from the Catholic viewpoint.👍

If the parents have invested the task of teaching to “DiggidyDog”, then I would hope he teaches with compassion and truth.

I am betting that this child, after being told not to read it, has had their curiosity perked and will read it. However if children are looking for war stories to enjoy there are real war stories that actually influenced History that are far more compelling and enjoyable to read. Just my :twocents: on that.

This discussion does not belong in a CCD class unless the instructor is showing how this book’s contents diverge from Church teachings.

I may encourage a kid to read Harry Potter, I don’t know, I have never read it or seen the movies, however the author of Harry Potter, I believe, does not present their story as truth like the BoM does.

I would agree with you however, this is a CCD class, so the influencing of kids in what to read is unavoidable. This isn’t a public elementary setting (where you would be spot on with your comment), but a setting where the children are going to be taught the Catholic faith and influenced by Catholic materials.

If I sent my child to a CCD class and found out that the Book of Mormon was discussed in any regards other than the instructor tore it apart (not physically of course) I would be furious.

If you can get a 6th grader to read the Bible, tell me how you do it. I teach 6th grade CCD and our curriculum is the Bible. I can hardly get them to open it.

Don’t belabor the Book of Mormon. Tell the boy the truth: they are an American religious sect that started up in the 19th Century that holds views incompatible with Christianity although Mormons are usually very kind, family-oriented people.

Sorry to have stirred things up. It wasn’t my intent.

Thank you to the posters who asserted that this is a CCD class. I was about to make the same point.
 
Have you notified the child’s parents?

They may not be aware of it. I surely would want to know. I was “wined and dined” as a teenager, they even tried to lure me into their place without my parents’ knowledge. This happened to my friend’s son, and they hooked him in.

This kid seems too young to be hit on by Mormons, at least I HOPE he’s too young. I can see teenagers getting baited - but 12 year olds? What is the rule about this, Mormons? This whole thing sounds a little off.
