Study book for Psalms?

Can anyone recommend a good study book or two for going through the Psalms? I’ve found that understanding the history and getting insight into the interpretations of other scholars to be very helpful.

My tastes lean towards Sheed and pre-V2 writings. There are no issues there, but I’ve found that the books that endured from the pre-V2 era have a certain authoritative tone to their writings which I enjoy.

I haven’t read it (but I hear it’s very good and I enjoy the authors other books) is “Singing In The Reign” by Michael Barber.Two books that I have read and have found helpful are two small books on the Psalms by Protestants, one by C.S. Lewis and the other by Dietrich Boenhoffer.

If you don’t mind spending a little money, probably the best out there from a Catholic perspective is the “Navarre Bible Commentary on The Psalms and The Song of Solomon.” Not only does it have good historical and literary information, but a lot of deep spiritual insight as well.
 
I’ve enjoyed the Navarre, which gives a commentary on each Psalm.

Michael Barber’s “Singing in the Reign” and Come and See’s “David and the Psalms” give a good overview of the Psalms in general, with a good background on groups of psalms, but not the individual kind of commentary like the Navarre does. I think they are both valuable for the person who is unfamiliar with the Psalms. But if you are already familiar with the literary styles and groupings of the Psalms, you may find this redundant.

A priest, who I consider rather expert on the Psalter, recommends the Oxford commentary above all others. I think this is it.
 
BTW, the Navarre Bible Study will go over what the original meaning of the Text was to the Jews, but also how the Christians may read the very same Psalm, showing how a certain psalm may point to Christ. It also includes some Church Fathers thoughts on various Psalms.
