So…does this mean that they are sleeping with male students at Catholic universities? Are we only concerned with girls’ chastity, and not male students? One could assume that they are sleeping with males that go to the same Catholic universities, which would mean we should be concerned with male students attending such universities being promiscuous also…no? My point being–why doesn’t the title state…’'female and male students are more promiscous at Catholic universities?’’
I agree completely. It takes two to tango with sex. Both sides are equally responsible in my opinion. If one gender is demanding of sex, it doesnt mean the other should jump off the cliff of eternal death also. I would say though that it is not uncommon for people from off campus not affiliated with the university and students from other universities that visit that could change the numbers around a bit depending on the culture at the university. I know at some universities there is a very high rate of sexual relationships from outside the university.

It should come as little surprise though that the numbers are so high. Compared to past generations teens are very sheltered and immature. This means that in college they get freedom for the first time and are away from home with no boundaries and nobody telling them what to do. Add in liberal professors that encourage it then you get what we have today. I would like to see statistics on promiscuity after college to see if college behavior is more of a reflection of the college atmosphere or if the college attitude continues well beyond. I know that many go to college with no plans to become sexually active but the first frat party or weekend out on the college town changes that. Sometimes the first day of classes will do it especially in a philosophy or comparative religion class. Many Catholics get through high school but college outside of their parents is a whole different animal.

After looking into it, this study was only examining female sexual habits. Males aren’t a part of the headline because they weren’t a part of the study.

Well, that wasn’t the finding of the study. The study may well have found males at Catholic universities to be more chaste than average.
Then if that’s the case, put the findings in the same study. Don’t focus just on one gender. It takes two, enough blame for both partners. And if we’re going to try and fix the problem, the males have to be just as much a part of the solution as the females.

And we should be every bit as concerned about males sleeping around at these schools, as we should females. I don’t like the double standard being subtly implicated here. (no offense to you thereseozi…you didn’t conduct the study!!) 😛 I would be just as outraged to find out my son is sleeping around in college, as I would if my daughter was.
Its a dangerous precedent as well to focus on just one gender’s sexual habits because the double standard plays out enough as it is in sexual abuse and rape cases.

I edited my post, apparently the study was exclusively on women’s sex habits. Hence the direction of the discussion.

*They should have been, is my point. I RARELY read studies that speak of men even in the light of being ‘‘promiscuous’’ as if this is title that only women get who sleep around. Thus, the subtle implication of a double standard. I find the study interesting, not surprising necessarily, but interesting…but there doesn’t ever seem to be studies that discuss men in this light…And these girls are sleeping with someone. Maybe off campus partners, but on the average, I remember college days, and the girls who were sleeping with guys, were sleeping with classmates…guys they met at frat parties…male students. *

*Exactly. Why were **men and *women not studied in this ‘‘study??’’ I don’t mean to take this thread off on a tangent…but it does bear mentioning. It doesn’t make sense to me why women are being singled out in a study about promiscuity at a Catholic college, when they are most likely sleeping with male students…

Im not surprised. My brother goes to a Jesuit university and the stories he tells will make many of you stunned. I mean one class at his Jesuit university required viewing the Vagina Monologues for a passing grade.
I notice that the local Baptist college here in our area does not show this type of pornographic gutter filth that Catholic colleges support. They are showing decent family oriented plays by the students.
Didn’t Our Lord say that you will know them by their fruits?
Why spend hard earned money to send your children to be indoctrinated in this type of pornographic filth at Jesuit colleges, when they can get a family oriented decent education at a Baptist college?

It boggles the mind, indeed. I agree. 😦

I think you’re getting too caught up in ‘fairness.’ This was an academic study. The researchers may well have been specifically studying changes in women’s behavior in society.

Another example of how this gets reported might be the following…

Let’s pretend that 50% of self-described Catholic men were okay with premarital sex in 1990, and only 33% of self-described Catholic women were. Then let’s say another study took place in 2020 which showed that the Catholic men number was unchanged, but the Catholic women number went up from 33% to 50%.

What’s the big story? That the Catholic women number went way up!

Either way, this important element of this particular article is that something’s changing with Catholic women. Talking about how much blame Catholic men should take for this seems like a red herring to me, unless you want to talk about the macro issue of chastity in general, and ignore the details of this article.

That makes a bit more sense–I like ‘‘let’s pretend’’ paragraph…ok, I see…I don’t think my posts were red herrings though, But that’s ok Havard…I’ll forgive you this one time.

Hmm, you said:
Considering the topic is promiscuity and virtuousness, what else might you have been suggesting?
I meant what I said. The girls were “boy-crazy” and I called my daughter to confirm what she told me that long ago. Christendom girls weren’t sleep-arounds.

I can’t help it if you drew the conclusion that they were no better than girls at schools where that is a problem.

I think what we should bring into the discussion is why girls ‘‘sleep around.’’ Maybe some just like it…but most of the time, when you see a girl who is sleeping around…she has a lot of inner problems. Self esteem and inner turmoil at play. I roomed with a girl in college, who went absolutely wild the first few weeks at college. She said she had moved around a lot, never got close to anyone growing up. Her dad was very strict…not very loving. To me, that contributed to her promiscuity. But, men will sleep around for various other reasons…mere physical pleasure ranks at the top of the list, I’d gather. We are not built alike, therefore our desire for sex will be different. Girls with esteem issues will look to men to validate them through sex, and some men might just look for attractive women to sleep with…because that is how they are wired. So…is the problem the school, or is it that they grew up not getting love from their dad…or they came from a broken home…or some other reason? 'The difference between BOTH men and women say 100 years ago to today…is that both genders respected the act of sex more, and were willing to wait for marriage. They had role models at home to look up to, while now…they might not. So…it’s a strange study to me, because I don’t think it has anything to do with the Catholic colleges, it has more to do with the changing times…and maybe if anything to report, is that onlookers would ‘‘assume’’ that a Catholic college should have better rates of chastity, and perhaps that is surprising to some. Other than that, the study wasn’t done in a vacuum. So, it leaves too much to speculation.

I can’t help it if you think so.
In short, in a conversation about promiscuity vs virtuousness among Catholic women, lil_flower_luv makes the point that students at great Catholic schools like Christendom are perhaps exceptional(ly virtuous). You respond by saying 'Oh yeah sure" and “I didn’t notice that the students were any different from those elsewhere.” I question your anecdote, and somehow that means I think that Christendom women sleep-arounds?

I see… :nope:

You know I love hearing what you have to say! :hug3: I just don’t want this to turn into a discussion about sexism. By the way, the professor who conducted the study is a woman.

Further, I emailed her and invited her to come check this thread out… who knows, maybe she’ll take me up on it and even weigh in!

Oh, yeah, sure. My daughter went to Christendom, and I didn’t notice that the students were any different from those elsewhere - nor did my daughter who commented to me once that the girls there were as boy-crazy as other girls. Did your children go there? At least I know what I’m talking about.
I’m of the college age, sir. I’ve visited great Catholic schools and not-so-great Catholic schools. You should be proud your daughter went to an authentically Catholic school - she was very lucky. How many other colleges/universities have a dress code…or a curfew? Mass twice a day? Adoration in between? Rosary part of everyone’s daily routine? I’m sorry, Rich, you (or your daughter) will not convince me Christendom is “no different from [schools] elsewhere.” I’m seriously considering going there…and living a semester in Rome, Sweet Home. 🙂

Note: It’s perfectly natural to be “boy crazy” btw. Better than “sex crazy” and a lot better than “sin crazy” 😉

God Bless…
