I am currently doing a degree in literature and one of our set texts is Christopher Marlowe’s Dr Faustus, my grandmother has just informed me that this had been been on the index of prohibted books? Am i ok to study it as it is a compulsory part of my degree?

Also i realise this post is probably in the wrong place but couldnt work out where it belonged and figured family life includes education

The Index Librorum Prohibitorum, as it was known, was abolished by Pope Paul VI in 1966. I don’t think Marlowe was ever on it.

There have been several versions of the list, and most of the books listed look incredibly dull and would probably bore you to death before having any moral impact on your immortal soul. The list also contained some books which are now recognised as classics - such as Hugo’s Les Miserables, and even St Faustina’s writings!

I wish you all the best with your degree. I think Marlowe is a fantastic writer and his Dr Faustus has so many treasures in it.

Thank you. I was half way through reading it when Grandma said i wasn’t allowed to and so far it does seem really interesting.

Am i right in thinking that as the list was abolished I’m ok reading anything else i get set that may have been on there? I’m only in my first year and my full degree is actually literature and classical studies so no doubt there will be something else that comes up.

Actually, there are many pro-Christian ideas in Dr. Faustus. It stresses discipline and restraint. Dr. Faustus is an antagonistic character, which is a very interesting technique at story-telling.

It’s a classic, and keep in mind the true beauty of it may be lost in translation.

Thats why I was confused, I couldnt see what anyone would think was wrong about it, knowing Grandma she was probably thinking of a different play or something.

I’m studying the 1604 text which is as close to the original as you can get so right now I would happily lose some of the beauty to have a translation :rotfl:
