The canon was changed so that intellectual work was no longer permitted en masse.

The 1917 code of canon law permitted intellectual work on Sunday. Some people don’t realize that the 1983 code changed that.

I attended a Catholic high school (well after 1983) and students would occasionally ask the religion teachers about this and they were told that intellectual work was an exception. Probably because the questions were asked more in a “Wouldn’t it be morally wrong for you to assign homework this weekend?” sort of way.

I am in college now and I can’t imagine having work done before most Sundays… but I will have to try.
