Studying the Deuterocanonical Books

As a former fundamentalist, I grew up with the shorter Bible, I fully understand the arguments for the canonical standing of ALL the Old Testament books. I believe they are inspired Scripture. But I’m still having trouble seeing how they fit into the whole message of the Bible.

What interpretive tools, commentaries, articles, web sites, etc., have helped you to appreciate and understand the FULL Bible?

I am not aware that Catholic commentaries treat these books in a different way from the other books of the Bible. Their main difference is only that they were written or are only available in Greek.

You will note that Tobias, Judith and Esther remind us of Ruth in that they are centered on individuals. Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus are similar to Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Baruch follows Jeremiah’s heritage. Macchabees is a “modern” version of Samuel and Kings.

Accept them for what they are: the word of God. You will, by yourself find many connections with the rest of the Bible, After all, they all have one and the same author.

The Consuming Fire by Rev. Michael Duggan is very good at breaking down every book of the Old Testament, and relating it to other OT books as well as the New Testament.
