Studying the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

If you know of any good resources for this please post! 🙂 I’ve been through an Advent Scripture series and it’s made me think of studying what the Jewish people and the authors of Old Testament books knew about the Holy Spirit - and some New Testament times prior to Pentecost as well would tie in with what I’m curious to know about.

For instance, when Elizabeth greets Mary she is said to be filled with the Holy Spirit and that’s why she cries out when John the Baptist leaps for joy in her womb. I’d like to enrich my knowledge of the Holy Spirit by studying these themes. Thanks for any help!

I’m not sure what it is that you’re looking for… but if you are looking for passages in the Old Testament (& New) that point to the Holy Spirit I can search through some old notes and list them for you.

I did a study on this awhile ago. Don’t know where my notes are. Try to give you some stuff off the top of my head.
Well the first reference to the Holy Spirit is in genesis with the “Spirit of God” moving over the waters… .the word in Hebrew is “ruah” which can mean "spirit, wind, breath.’.The Holy Spirit in the ot acts differently than the New. AFTER CHRISTS death and after the Pentecost, the HS comes and resides with us permanently. In the OT, thatdoesn’t happen, except for one person -king David. The Spirit of God is said to "rush " upon people, like Saul, Samson et al. It was not given permanently, it was given to a person for s specific purpose .
and for a limited amount of time. That’s what I remember offhand. See if I can find my notes!

The Catholic Encyclopedia article on the Holy Ghost considers the New Testament and the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost enumerated by prophet Isaias in the Old Testament. Catena Aurea by St. Thomas Aquinas might be helpful in researching individual Gospel verses.

If you check out this page you’ll find a list of verses that mention the Holy Spirit (actually just the word “spirit”…so the spirits of men are mentioned as well…) from the Old Testament from start to finish. Keep clicking “next” at the bottom to see more pages.
