While debating with die-hard Fundamentalists on Carm.org, I ran into a question I can’t answer.

The poster asked me why certain Catholic Theologians called the Blessed Virgin “the only hope of sinners.”

What should I say?

I’d say “I don’t know, since that isn’t what the Church teaches. Since you’re interested, why don’t you read their writings and find out yourself why they say that.” Then add “I’m only interested in defending what the Church teaches, not what “certain Catholic Theologians” may or may not have written.”

You should be saying to yourself, “Why am I spending time on such an ardently hardcore anti-Catholic discussion forum?” You’d have more luck convincing Osama bin Laden that America’s global intentions are noble and just.

Examples with context?

I have seen this said before. It’s never used to say Jesus Christ is not the hope of sinners, but merely praises Mary’s necessary role in salvation history in bringing salvation through Christ into the world in His Incarnation and continually praying for all sinners to be sent the graces necessary for conversion and salvation–and her Son always answers her prayers (of course, we must accept those graces).

Just ask them where in the Bible they find Sola Scriptura, and go home to lunch.

This is my interpretation, too.

And why not ask them where in the Bible they find Sola Scriptura?

First, which theologians?

Second, Mary gave birth to Christ: that would be a good reason to speak in what looks like a hyperbole in prayer.
