Stupak Touts Sidebar Bill Banning Abortion $, Pro-Lifers Skeptical

Washington, DC – Congressman Bart Stupak, the de facto leader of the coalition of pro-life Democrats who may vote no on the Senate health care bill because of its massive abortion funding, expressed optimism that a deal could be work out on a sidebar bill to ban funding that goes along with the main bill.

This is an encouraging sign. Stupak is a good person. Maybe he should go up against Obama in the next election. Let’s get a pro life president who will repeal abortion…Re: Roe v. Wade. Not just talk about how wrong abortion is and do nothing.

This is a dangerous move IMHO.

A sidebar bill leaves it open to Mr Obama’s Executive veto…or just not signing it

Mr Obama has made many promises before… Transparency for one

I agree. There is no way to ensure that any sidebar abortion fix will actually be enacted. The president and Democratic Senators are saying, “Trust us. Vote for the Senate bill, and we’ll fix the abortion part later.” But once Rep. Stupak et al. vote for the Senate bill, the others won’t need them anymore, and that’s probably the last we’ll ever hear of any fix.

.

Sidebar Bill is kind of like a non-binding resolution.

If they are serious, then pass the sidebar bill FIRST. Before voting on the Senate Bill.

They are not serious.

Mr. Stupak, vote no on the Senate Bill.

👍👍

Or if they were serious include the Stupak Amendment as PART of the bill and not an amendment

If the Stupak Amendment is included as part of the bill, then the Senate would have to revote on it. It will take time and there is a risk that it might not pass the Senate.

They don’t want reconciliation.

What they want is to pass the Senate bill with no changes. Any changes would need another Senate vote. They don’t want another / different Senate bill.
