Substitute "Glory Be" prayer instead of the Gloria

My wife and I attended our first contemplative mass this last weekend. We were surprised by several things that were different from mass we’re accustomed to but the one I want to ask about is after the Kyrie, instead of going into the Gloria, the priest led us into "Glory be to the Father… prayer. I have never experienced this before and I’m curious about whether this is acceptable. Several other parts of the mass were different from a typical mass but I want to focus on this one item.

Was the Mass for a Sunday (IE either the vigil Mass for the Sunday or actually on Sunday)?
If so, the Gloria should, rubrically, be said.
If Father didn’t feel like doing it, the ‘Glory Be…’ may have been his substitute.
Technically, he shouldn’t have done that, but… there are worse things.

" The Gloria in excelsis
53. The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) a most ancient and venerable hymn by which the Church, gathered together in the Holy Spirit, glorifies and entreats God the Father and the Lamb. The text of this hymn may not be replaced by any other. It is intoned by the Priest or, if appropriate, by a cantor or by the choir; but it is sung either by everyone together, or by the people alternately with the choir, or by the choir alone. If not sung, it is to be recited either by all together or by two parts of the congregation responding one to the other.

It is sung or said on Sundays outside Advent and Lent, and also on Solemnities and Feasts, and at particular celebrations of a more solemn character."

Thank you for your answer. I do think there are worse things too. There were other things at this Sunday mass that I consider more of a problem but they were things I’ve saw before at other masses. This was a new one.

In short, if it was a Sunday or Feast, this was wrong.
 
As I understand it a contemplative mass is basically a regular mass that is somewhat more quiet than a typical Sunday mass. With the exception of the sanctuary, the church is lit using candles. The sanctuary is lit as normal. The music is more subdued and the feel of the mass is more contemplative.
 
This reminds me of Mass I attended in Berkeley, California years ago. All kinds of “innovations.” More “kumbaya,” though.
