Hello.
I’ve been wondering, if the vestments of the new mass could be used for the old mass, what to do if there is no amice and maniple available. Could there be substitute vestments for these?
I’m helping a priest in my parish to celebrate the EF next week and the only vestments available are the new mass vestments and we don’t have time to have some made. Could it be substituted or do we have to postpone the mass until we get them?

Thanks!

This happened to me once when I was serving as an MC at a TLM. The visiting priest brought all of his own vestments but forgot his maniple. Needless to say, there wasn’t one to be found in the sacristy. A narrow stole, of the colour of the day and without obtrusive design, folded so as to diminish its length, worked well enough in its stead.

So what you’re saying is that even a short stole folded could be used as a substitute?
How about the amice?

Know anyone who can sew? An amice is really easy to make out of fine sheeting. It’s just a rectangle with tapes on two of the corners after all.

Google for the size, or look in a catalogue.

Why do you have to have them made? Call a church supply company and have them immediately shipped out. Amices especially are in plentiful supply.

An amice is a very simple garment to make. I’m fairly certain even my 11-year-old goddaughter could make one. Appropriate material can surely be found easily and cheaply as well.
