If there is any one subject that seems to gather the most attention on this web site it appears to be the subject of sex. And one of the areas of sex that is most written about is masturbation. As someone who still fights the battle, I find it interesting that almost all of the posts I’ve read are by those who are either still struggling or are trying to help those who struggle. What I would find most helpful would be to hear from those who have successfully overcome sex addiction. Is there anyone actually out there who has done this? I would like to know what life is like for you. Do you still feel the cravings that once caused you to sin, or have they vanished? Or do the cravings remain, but are just not so strong? I understand that sexual urges remain with us until “10 minutes after we die” so what really defines overcoming sex addiction? And if you are one of those successes, please tell us what helped you the most.

I think your use of the words “sex addiction” which is a medical term are a little bit confusing.

Were you “diagnosed” by a doctor, or yourself?

Perhaps the OP is describing a habitual practice in which case it could be considered addictive. If one finds it almost impossible to get through the day without viewing pornography and/or masturbating then that could be considered an addiction without a doctor’s formal diagnosis…teachccd

I agree with teachccd that it is not necessary to see a doctor to know when a sexual craving is controlling your life. Although I can usually go for months at a time without giving in to the craving it is the level of torment that exists when sex is not available that is the clue to addiction. No one should feel tormented by the craving for sex. That does not seem normal to me. It’s like the torment that an alcoholic experiences when he goes without his drink, the classic “dry drunk”.

There is such a thing as having a moral addiction, which is most likely what the OP is referring to.

Resolution and daily Mass, that’s all you need, it’s not an addiction it’s concupiscense that has to be ruled by the virtue of temperence. The eyes are the primary entrance to loss of control, don’t watch salacious television, filter your internet, and don’t let yourself be drawn in by immodest woman you encounter. It all starts with a resolute mind. Make a decision you will not be a slave to your body.

Good advice. Not easy, but good advice.

well, unless given the grace by God, overcoming impurity is a very long and hard process, and it can’t be done alone, meaning without God.

of course like said before, temptations of the flesh will happen till the day you die,
but in my experience, the best way to overcome impure actions and thoughts, is to first notice what leads you into those sins, and then practice to make yourself think before you act,
how i did that was by going to confession every time i committed these sins, because i hated it so much, it was rather humiliating(which is the general idea) even though it took a long time, eventually it just kept getting easier and easier to stop myself,

although that’s not all i did, i also tried to learn self control by mortification, which is to deny yourself of certain things, or to do things you don’t like to do, and stuff like that, which really helps you learn self control, and is a very good penance that is pleasing to God.
here’s something that helped me with ideas for mortifying myself -
catholicapologetics.info/catholicteaching/virtue/vpenence.htm

but i think the best advice for overcoming temptations like this is to pray, go to church, go to confession, and receive the sacraments. every day.

it may not be easy at first, but i can say from my own experience, it gets better, so just keep at it,
and just keep in mind what Jesus said, what does it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, yet suffer the loss of his immortal soul?

and also keep in mind, what is that momentary pleasure worth? if it leads to never ending torture.

well, that’s it…those are the things i did.
