What is the Muslims’ opinion about Muhammad ordering women to breast-feed young men in order for them to become mahram? this has been a hot topic on Islamic tvs lately with angry reactions from many Muslims who refused to accept this as moral, let alone a divine command. What is the opinion of Muslims on this board?

Hello,

Muhammed didn’t order women to breastfeed men in order to become a mahram. He ordered A woman to give A MAN some of her breastmilk for him to drink in order to become a mahram. There is no license or ruling to spreadd that to the population and it has never been reported along the history of islam as an acceptable act. FurthermoreThere is no mentionning of a breastfeeding act taken place as in physical contact.

This case was specific to a certain woman and a certain man who was her servant . The general rule is that no matter how much breastfeeding or drinking breastmilk can make anybody a mahram above the age of 2 years old . This is dictated by the Quran itself . Ilsamic Scholars in overwhelming majority agree on this opinion. As i said before , the understanding of teh companions of the prophet was that this case was to a certain 2 individuals or else it would have been apåplied when needed ( which never happened) Ofcourse there are people who have their wierd opinions every now and then. But they are in the very minority.

In Islam we were iordered to follow consensus of scholars and to be careful from the individual errors of scholars. Especially if tehy are working for the government.

I am sorry to burst your bubble

hi Meedo, glad you’re here since you’re Egyptian. Hala Serhan , in her show, had a cheikh from Al-azhar. It’s not my bubbles, it is a hot topic among Muslims, and data can be given from tradition and explanations about the act, which made Hala Serhan, in fact, cry for help against such teachings from the Al-Azhar cheikh.

Yes i know. He is the Mufti for the Arab Republic of Egypt and he is a member of Al Azhar. And i as i said in my response above , he is opposed by the overwhelming majority of islamic scholars within and outside al Azhar. He isnt really that great scholar he is just bieng appointed to a prominent post because he generally approves the government biddings. It not a hot topic amongst muslims , its a hot topic in the muslim media . because they think he is wierd.n So dont worry , muslims arent doing that anyrtime soon. people generally discuss it to laugh at him. That what happens when teh Dictatorship controls religious bodies.

hope that clarifies

Yes i do know Muslims will not accept this …in fact the woman cried for hep…it’s maskhara…but i heard of many , on the media, who defended the hadith and sunna as authentic and the Azhar gave a fatwa on this.Where did the Azhar get wrong info from? What i read is comments about the hadith, that it can’t be true. So the hadith/sunna is there, but now it is doubted because it is immoral? i don’t understand.

The Hadith is authentic, the problem is this Egyptian guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about and is coming out with some very unorthodox (and perverse) interpretations. For instance:
*
Muhammad Ibn ‘Umar told us: Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdullah, Az-Zuhri’s nephew, told us on authority of his father that he said: an amount of one milk drink was collected in a pot or glass, so Salem used to drink it every day, for five days. After this, he used to enter at her while her head is uncovered. This was permission from Messenger of Allah to Sahla bint Suhail.*
(Ibn Sa’d, Kitab At-Tabaqat Al-Kabir)

See? The boy drank it out of a cup, he wasn’t physically breastfed. If someone told you they’d had some milk then isn’t the natural assumption that they drank it out of a cup and not that they went and suckled a cow (forgive the crude analogy)?

And I agree with Meedo that this is what happens when religious authorities are placed in their position not according to their merit, but how much they appease the secular government.

Hi Kad,

this would be a very logical answer if the cheikh happened to be the only person who understood as such. But he is not, and based on sound tradition. What you gave is a the version of Muhammad Ibn Umar, or best known as Al-Wakidi who is notorious for thousands of false hadith.

Zainab daughter of Abu Salama reported: I heard Umm Salama, the wife of Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon himy, saying to 'A’isha: By Allah, I do not like to be seen by a young boy who has passed the period of fosterage, whereupon she ('A’isha) said: Why is it so? Sahla daughter of Suhail came to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: Allah’s Messenger, I swear by Allah that I see in the face of Abu Hudhaifa (the signs of disgust) on account of entering of Salim (in the house), whereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Suckle him. She (Sahla bint Suhail) said: He has a beard. But he (again) said: Suckle him, and it would remove what is there (expression of disgust) on the face of Abu Hudhaifa. She said: (I did that) and, by Allah, I did not see (any sign of disgust) on the face of Abu Hadhaifa. (Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3428)

umm Salamah wasnt weaning children and so had no milk to offer which means Aisha’s advise was not about putting milk in the cup but actual breast suckling.

Ibn Abu Mulaika reported that al-Qasim b. Muhammad b. Abu Bakr had narrated to him that 'A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Sahla bint Suhail b. 'Amr came to Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Messenger of Allah, Salim (the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa) is living with us in our house, and he has attained (puberty) as men attain it and has acquired knowledge (of the sex problems) as men acquire, whereupon he said: suckle him so that he may become unlawful (in regard to marriage) for you He (Ibn Abu Mulaika) said:** I REFRAINED FROM (narrating this hadith) FOR A YEAR OR SO ON ACCOUNT OF FEAR.** I then met al-Qasim and said to him: You narrated to me a hadith which I did not narrate (to anyone) afterwards. He said: What is that? I informed him, whereupon he said: Narrate it on my authority that 'A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) had narrated that to me. (Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3426

Here was a man who was afraid to narrate what he had heard and decided to keep this story to himself for more than a year. Was he afraid fom the idea of putting some milk in a cup?

Well the man is pretty much the only person who understands it as such (unless you’d like to provide evidence that this is not the case?), hence it creating such widespread backlash and denunciation in Egypt.

But if you want scholars saying that fosterage through breastfeeding is only valid before the infant reaches two years old. Then all 4 schools of jurisprudence and their founding Imams (Abu Hanifa, Malik ibn Anas, Al-Shafi’i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal); as well as Umar ibn Al-Khattab, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Huraira, Ash-Shaybani, and no doubt there are many many more who I’m not aware of held this view; as well as the vast majority of scholars in modern day Egypt who denounced this man for making such claims. You’ll need some very strong evidence to convince anyone that all these people were wrong and this pseudo-Sheikh appointed to support the Egyptian government is correct.

And you’re misreading the Hadith, it wasn’t about Umm Salama that’s just the woman who narrated it, it was about the woman named Sahla bint Suhail.

Read it again and see her husband’s (Abu Hudhaifa) reactions. Firstly we see he’s a jealous man and doesn’t like that there’s a now pubescent boy living with his wife whom she had previously adopted. But when Muhammad (pbuh) suggests to Sahla that Salim should drink her breast milk so that he would Islamically become her foster child he says this would remove her husband’s jealously of him living with her (as they’d be legally considered related), and when she does do this she says her husband wasn’t jealous after that.

Do you think a jealous man such as Abu Hudhaifa who feels disgust at just a non-related pubescent boy living with his wife, wouldn’t have a problem with him literally suckling his wife’s breast? Not just that… but that him doing this made his jealousy go away? That’s absurd.

Clearly it’s more logical that Salim drank the milk out of a container. By the way the Arabic word translated as ‘suckle’ doesn’t necessarily mean straight from a breast, it just means to drink the milk.

It’s more likely Ibn Abu Mulaika was afraid to narrate the Hadith since it involved Muhammad (pbuh) allowing a pubescent boy (and later a man) to live with a woman as her son whom he wasn’t genetically related to. Many Arabs would have considered that scandalous.

The fear wasnt out of how the breastfeeding happened. The fear is because there is a Quranic verse that clearly states that the effective Mahrum status cannot be applied unless the person to be fed is 2 years old or younger. The sahaba generally were very careful about narrating from the prophet. They want to make sure they narate the correct thing. having this Quranic verse in Mind and only hearing it from one source it was clear that Ibn Abu Mulaika wanted to confirm his understanding and confirst the hadeeth if it would set an exception from teh established ruling as the Quranic verse displayed.

This is not the Only exception in islam . Another example of an exception to teh Quranic ruling was a sahabi who was attested by the prophet PBUH that his testemony in court is worth of Two testemonies. Other exceptions exist as well.

To sum it up. There is no proof or evidence or even a hint that this adolecent boy was directly breastfed from, the breast nor that actually this ruling is valid for other than this one time exception.

The wisdom behind brotherhood in the breast is actually the transfer of genes and traits that would be effective in shaping the human body and characteristics to become similar to the donating mother. and thus her family. Thus would render the person who drinks her milk to be Mahram. The issue here isnt about how was the milk transferred but actually if the Milk was transferred during the time that it would take part in shaping the human , which is the 2 first years of life according to Islam.

Hope that clarified

indeed there are many…i personally heard of many on tv but you surely are asking for specific scholars and i will provide names tomorrow hopefully cuz it takes some time.

Abu Zaid said, “Al Murdi’a’ المُرْضِعة (the nursing woman) is the one who nurses her child with her breast in his mouth.”

Al-Rida with a diacritical mark above the “R” is pronounced "Rada or a diacritical mark underneath the “R” is pronounced “Rida’a”. Both Rada’a and Rida’a in the Arabic language IS A NOUN FOR SUCKING A BREAST, whether it was sucking the breast of a human female OR THE BREAST OF AN ANIMAL OR THE LIKE. So it is said in the (Arabic) language of someone WHO SUCKLED THE UDDER OF A COW or the teet of a sheep THAT HE NURSED (rada’a) FROM IT. **However, if a person milked the animals and drank the milk, THEN IT IS NOT SAID THAT HE NURSED (radi’a) **and it is not necessary in the (Arabic) language that the person nursing must be a child.

this is the translation of الفقه على المذاهب الأربعة. الإصدار 1.28 - لعبد الرحمن الجزيري).

That is true for the ‘’ Linguistic meaning of the word’’ not the legislative islamic meaning.

Its like using the word ‘‘weaning’’ . It is originally meaning that some infant would stop getting his food from teh breast, but it can also be used when fopr example describing ‘’ weaning the US from Foreign Oil’’

Aisha didnt breastfeed anybody. The status of Mahram can as well be maintained if a relative of Aishas breastfeeds a Kid. For example, if Aisha’s Sister or Niece Breastfeeds an Infant then he becomes mahram on Aisha herself . So Aisha doesnt have to have children in order for her to have infants become her mahrams. The hadeeths doesnt say that Aisha fed any adults.
i read this, thats why i am asking:

As for the second part of the narrative, it seems only a conspiracy against the Mother of the believers. Firstly, as you have correctly mentioned that being a childless woman, it is highly unlikely for her to suckle a child. Secondly, the white lie entailed in the narrative becomes apparent merely on the grounds that not even a single person can be named with any degree of certainty from amongst the Muslims who could be claimed to have actually been nursed by the Mother of the believers. The most that can be said is that the Mother of the Believers may, in contrast to the other wives of the Prophet (pbuh), have actually mistakenly generalized the advice given by the Prophet (pbuh) to Abu Hudaifah’s wife. This opinion of the Mother of the Believers gave her opponents a chance to take advantage of the situation by incorporating, in the narrative, the fable of her nursing all those whom she desired to permit entry into her chamber.

understanding-islam.com/related/text.asp?type=question&qid=2094

Seems the problem is in the hadith. People are questioning them because indeed, they give the impression that it is breast-feeding when they know it can’t be morally.
For example, if Aisha’s Sister or Niece Breastfeeds an Infant then he becomes mahram on Aisha herself
can you please explain why? and does this apply to blood transfer as well?

The first part of your post i dont really understand ! can you edxplain?

As for the second sentence i already told tyou that the issue was not moral to begin with , the issue that made this man stay one year and afterwards try to confirm it was that it went against an established previous qurasnic ruling. Again , no mention about phisical contact of breastfeeding.

As for your question. It is an established ruling in teh Quran as there is a verse detailing the people whom one cannot marry and thus become a mahram. No that doesnt apply to blood transfusion.

.
The first part of your post i dont really understand ! can you edxplain?
I quoted an Islamic link where the hadith is questioned exactly because of the bad impression it gives. In other words, the problem lies in the hadith that gives this impression, that’s why the fatwa was issued.
No that doesnt apply to blood transfusion.
why?

sorry for my late reply…i lost the thread during my absence.
