Hi Moe,

I hesitate, when I post to say very much because I have no idea the depth of pain you are feeling. As a mother of four I can only imagine, and it has always been my greatest fear. As you have mentioned no one knows however what that kind of pain really feels like untill one is truly experiencing it.

I have had other Deaths of people very close to me that have caused me great pain and other trials also. Like you the only way I have gotten through any of those has been because of My Faith and knowing that God loves me!

Sometime when the pain is so great it is not so easy to feel God’s love, those are the times however when he is the closest to us. He knows how much you and Greg loved KK , he knows the pain you are in. I know from my own life he has brought many great Graces and goodness from sadness and tragedies,

He loves you, Greg and Amanda very much I know he is walking with you all,and has you wrapped in his arms. I continue to pray for all of you… Especially asking Our Blessed Mother to keep you all in her prayers!:gopray2:
THANK YOU NORDA!

I was so glad that you read my post and that you treated it like a “conversation”. I will try to answer as best I can. I don’t know how to put your comments in, though, so I’ll just answer each as I can.

Our son was our second child. He did die very suddenly. We found out several days afterward, so there was no chance to say goodbye, or to see him. That is still heartbreaking. I cling to the fact that I will see him again in heaven.

We also have a daughter who is now 39. She has such an array of problems that it would take several pages to tell. Suffice it to say that we are raising her daughter who is 16. Lauren will be a junior in high school in the fall. We really feel that God has placed her here for a reason. Not just for her sake, but for ours. We lost so much when Patrick died–including hope–that she is truly a gift from Him: hope for the future. She is a beautiful, talented, intelligent girl. We’re very proud of her.

I do know what that feeling of living in hell is like. I just didn’t want to go on. I could hardly bear to wake up each morning, because the pain was so great. What I wanted you to know is that it does get better. You don’t have to do anything. Just grieve as much as you need to, for as long as you need to, in the way that you need to. It is very individual. When I said that the emotions are tucked away–I did not do that. God did. Somehow He just begins to heal the open wound that you feel. For me it was actual physical pain–in my gut–like right below my breastbone there is an actual physical pain… Even now I can feel it at my core. But He softens it, He pads it with love and wonderful memories, so that it isn’t like a knife stabbing you in the heart. It takes a long time–as I said, it was at least five years before I felt truly “normal” again. I don’t mean “closure”. There is no such thing. I don’t mean you get over it. You will never get over your love and your loss of your precious child. I just want to assure you that the crippling despair and the pain do subside. God is merciful. He does that. Trust in Him. I just clung to the verse in Psalm 139 that “All the days ordained for me were written in His book before one of them came to be.” That is true of McKayla as well.

I love the fact that you are helping each other and also reaching out to others. So many marriages fail and so many parents isolate themselves. There are many, many of us who do know what you are going through and we are always open to helping. Just yesterday I happened to watch Oprah and Elizabeth Edwards was on. The show was really old, but it was about the death of their 16 year old son. It was so good. I wish you had seen it. She has written a book called “Saving Graces” and deals a lot with that event and how they survived. I"m going to get it for myself. I will also try to find the book you mentioned by Gregory Floyed. Everything I read did help. Mostly they gave me hope that I could get through and be okay again.

The loneliness will probably always be there, because she is not. But it won’t be the main thing you feel. Please just allow yourself to go through this in your own way and your own time. I have met so many other parents who have lost a child–our son died with another boy and we have remained friends with his parents–and each one has come through it in time. That was the main reason I wrote to you. I always do when some one’s child dies and I know them. I just want you to know that you will not always feel the way you do today–you will get better. Your faith in God is the most important thing and your relationships with your family and friends are so important.

I wanted to say that you are truly a blessing to Moe and ask that you keep in touch with her through this very rough time. I am very sorry for your loss also… I cannot imagine what you ladies have/are going through… My daughters are my life. I cannot imagine life without either of them.

**I COULDN’T PUT IT IN MORE BEAUTIFUL WORDS … HEARING FROM SOMEONE FROM THIS CLUB - A CLUB THAT NOONE WANTS TO BELONG …IS SUCH A GOD SEND …

PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE STRENGTH CONTINUE TO CONVERSE … YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE HOW HELPFUL IT IS TO ME.

OUR DAUGHTERS WERE OUR LIFE TOO … EVERYTHING WE DID WAS FOR THEM … AND EVERY DECISION WE MADE WAS FOR THEM … WHEN YOU BRING CHILDREN INTO THE WORLD … THEY MATTER MORE THAN YOU … AND I DON’T MEAN THE BAD … I MEAN THAT WONDERFULLY - BECAUSE AS PARENTS … OUR LIVES ARE CHANGED WHEN WE BRING WONDERFUL LIFE INTO THE WORLD …

THEY AREN’T OURS … WE KNOW THAT … THEY ARE HIS … BUT WE THINK THEY ARE OURS … TO THE END OF OUR JOURNEY …

TREAT EACH DAY AS YOUR LAST … WE HAD NO REGRETS WITH MCKAYLA OR AMANDA … WE LOVED THEM EVERYDAY … AND THEY KNEW IT …**

I was so glad that you read my post and that you treated it like a “conversation”.

IT IS JUST EASIER FOR ME TO DO IT THAT WAY — AND I WANT IT TO BE LIKE A CONVERSATION!!!

That is still heartbreaking. I cling to the fact that I will see him again in heaven.

**THAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT I CLING TO – THAT WE WILL BE TOGETHER AGAIN …IT JUST HURTS SO MUCH THAT WE AREN’T TOGETHER RIGHT NOW … LIKE WE SHOULD BE … IF NATURAL ORDER WAS OUR HAND …

WE JUST PICKED OUT HER MEMORIAL STONE … ON HER STONE WE PUT THE VERSE … I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN AND YOUR HEARTS WILL BE FULL OF JOY (JOHN 16:22) … I GOT THAT FROM THE BOOK I MENTIONED A LOT … A GRIEF UNVEILED (ONE’S FATHER’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE DEATH OF A CHILD) ….BY GREGORY FLOYD … JUST AN AMAZING BOOK FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOSSED A CHILD OR FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO DO FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOSSED A CHILD… THIS BOOK ABOVE ANYTHING … WAS A SOURCE OF GREAT STRENGTH TO ME … AND HE IS CATHOLIC SO HE BRINGS IN MANY THINGS THAT WE CHERISH …. **

OH GOD IS GOOD … ISN’T HE? I AM SORRY FOR YOUR ADDITONAL TROUBLES … LOSING KK AT 13 WAS ESPECIALLY PAINFUL BECAUSE THEY ARE CRAZY ABOUT YOU AS A PARENT … THEY WANT TO PLEASE YOU … AND IT IS SUCH A FUN AGE … REBELLION HASN’T SETTLED IN … HATE, ETC. SHE LOVED US … AND WE WERE HER LIFE … AND VISE VERSA ….**

I do know what that feeling of living in hell is like.

I** REMEMBER THE NIGHT WE GOT BACK FROM BERLIN OR I SHOULD SAY THE MORNING … GREG, AMANDA AND I PILED INTO OUR BED … MANDY FELL ASLEEP – BUT GREG AND I JUST STARED AT THE CEILING … NOT BELIEVING …THAT THE BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY, AMAZINGLY LOVING AND TALENTED CHILD WAS GONE THAT I DROPPED OFF AT WALMART NOT 24 HOURS BEFORE …. I REMEMBER SENDING HER OFF AND HUGGING AND KISSING HER AND SAYING DON’T FORGET YOUR PRAYERS … AND SHE ROLLED HER EYES AND SAID DON’T WORRY ….I LOVE YOU AND BE SAFE … WELL I WAITED A BIT IN THE PARKING LOT … I NEVER LIKE MY KIDS TO BE AWAY AND IT IS EMOTIONAL FOR ME … AND I BLEW HER A KISS AND HEADED TO WORK … SHE TEXTED ME WITH THE PHONE SHE WANTED THE MOST FOR CHRISTMAS … AND SHE SAID … I DIDN’T TELL YOU HOW MUCH I WOULD MISS YOU … I AM MISSING YOU ALREADY …. **
SO EMOTIONAL … EVEN AS I TYPE THIS … I REMEMBER GETTING TO WORK AND EMAILING MY HUSBAND … AND SAYING … SHE IS AMAZING … SHE WILL BE GOING PLACES …. LITTLE DID WE KNOW – SHE WOULD BE HEADING FOR THE ‘FINAL’ PLACE THAT WE ALL ONLY CAN PRAY THAT WE ATTAIN.

What I wanted you to know is that it does get better.

I FEEL AN ACHE CONSTANTLY … AN ACHE THAT NEVER GOES AWAY … MY ARMS ACHE, MY HEART, MY WHOLE BEING … IT JUST ACHES.

But He softens it, I just clung to the verse in Psalm 139 that “All the days ordained for me were written in His book before one of them came to be.” That is true of McKayla as well.

THAT IS BEAUTIFUL … THAT SHALL BE A VERSE I MEDITATE ON … THANK YOU ….

A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE GAVE ME THAT BOOK AND IT IS WONDERFUL … I HAVEN’T FINISHED IT YET … BUT I WILL … SHE WRITES LOVELY … SHE REALLY DOES.

The loneliness will probably always be there, because she is not. But it won’t be the main thing you feel.

**I AM SO SORRY ABOUT THAT … WE HAVE BECOME VERY CLOSE FRIENDS WITH MCKAYLA’S BEST FRIEND … AND IT BRINGS US SUCH COMFORT … ALTHOUGH WE WONDER WHY WE WEREN’T DIDN’T GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER BEFORE … THERE IS A REASON.

I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO KEEP WRITING ME … YOU CAN’T IMAGINE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE HELPED ME ….**

Thank you Allison … God Bless you and your family … I am sorry if this has open some wounds … but it has been so very helpful!

** JUST A NOTE FROM GREG TO AMHERST/MONT VERNON FOR ALL THAT WAS DONE FOR KK DURING THESE 16 WEEKS AND CONTINUE TO BE DONE:**

**The Geisinger family would like to attempt to place in words our appreciation to the staff, students and parents at AMS for their compassion after the tragic loss of our daughter McKayla. We have learned over the last 12 weeks that strength to survive comes from our faith in God, a peace from knowing we constantly expressed love to McKayla, and compassion from those who genuinely feel compelled to express it to you through thoughts, prayers and visits. We miss KK terribly, and are learning slowly how to cope with what feels like her disappearance. The response to our loss was tremendous and beyond anything we would have imagined.

KK had an abnormality in one of the arteries that pumps blood to the heart muscle. Our perfect girl nor her family knew she had it and as the medical examiner stated, typically it is discovered after sudden death. One cardiologist stated that 1 in 100,000 children have this defect and in the State of NH they expect the sudden death of an adolescent as a result every 18 months. Anyone involved with kids should know the many symptoms of someone who has a heart problem, and the symptoms are not simply pain in the chest or arm. If only someone had told us that neck pain is a fairly common symptom of a heart attack, our precious KK may be playing the piano at her sisters graduation as planned. KK would have required heart surgery, but in 98% of all cases the child had a 100% recovery. For more information you could visit www.americanheart.org** and click on the heart attack and stroke warnings signs.

I also am compelled to mention to you that your AMS school staff, who some of them directly experienced the unimaginable, immediately responded to this tragedy in a way that was professional, compassionate, and considerate of ours, as well as everyone’s varying feelings. Tragedy struck suddenly, and from the onset, though grieving themselves, put in to place a plan to ensure that every child was back in their parents arms quickly and had the resources available to help them understand what they were feeling. Our daughter Amanda Graduates from AMS next week and we are saddened that we will no longer be involved with such a stellar group of people who work and volunteer at AMS. Our hearts are forever thankful.

Many parents contributed to the McKayla Geisinger Memorial fund, and some even gave their refund from the cancelled camp trip and we are happy to say that your contribution is tax deductible, and were generous enough that we can support an award in both Amherst and Mont Vernon schools for many years to come. Your generosity means that we can hear our daughters name mentioned in front of many people every year and that is something that will touch us more than you can understand.

Meals are brought to us every night from caring people many of whom we did not know. The compassion of people is a powerful medicine that aids healing in a way traditional medicine can not. Grieving is very tiring physically, and after a day of struggling to distract yourself from sadness while at work, to come home to a meal that someone made for you because they care, well, it could be liver and onions but it would taste like prime rib. We all live in an area that is full of warm caring people who need to express their sorrow in whatever way they can and we are all very lucky.

Finally, we must mention with sincere gratitude the many memorials people have created to our precious girl. The Amherst Soccer Club has petitioned the school board to name one of the new soccer fields in memory of McKayla, the MV Recreation committee contributed all proceeds from the Spring Gala Fun Run to go to KK’s fund to be used for the benefit of MV kids, AMS will have a McKayla Geisinger Music Award, the MV Village school created an area in the bird garden for McKayla’s memory, trees have been planted all around in her memory, moments of silence at school events, school programs dedicated to our little girl, bake sales, lemonade stands, prayer cards, all of this and more is more than our humble family can comprehend. We are so proud of our McKayla.

On the morning that Maureen dropped KK off at the bus leaving for camp, she told me how proud she was of KK and that “she was really going to go places”. In our long lives, we can only hope to make an impact on people, in KK’s short life, she did.

**Dear Family and Friends:

I just had to share with you all … the amazing thing that, again, will keep McKayla’s memory alive.

I got a call from the President of St. John Neumann’s CYO, Rich Eaton, (we belonged to the parish for many years up until 2000-2005). He asked to visit with us to go over an idea that the CYO wanted to do to memorialize McKayla.

St. John Neumann’s CYO wants to have a plaque in the Gathering Area with a Picture of McKayla in her Mite Cheerleading Uniform … and every year an award will be presented to the Mite Cheer Leader … who represents the qualities (Christian/Athletic) characteristics that McKayla possessed during her cheering and their name will be listed under the McKayla Geisinger Spirit Award for many years to come. Plus the winning Mite will get a plaque to take home. They have asked us to present the award each year to the winning recipient. There is only one other parishioner that has that honor, and we are just beside ourselves that we will be able to share this award with them.

Rich will let us know when the awards will be presented, and Greg will present it to the winning Mite Cheer Leader sometime in the Spring. Once her Picture/Plaque is up (fall time-frame) … the Pastor, Fr. Aggie, of SJN will have a blessing during one of the Masses … I will keep you updated on when that will be, just incase you want to come and be a part of this wonderful memorial. As you can imagine, Greg, I and Amanda are blown away by this unbelievable offer, especially since we no longer attend the parish. But both Amanda and McKayla left their mark at SJN the few years they were there, and we feel blessed that they want to honor McKayla with such an awesome memorial.

This past April at the CYO Banquet … one of the cheerleaders who cheered with McKayla … wrote the following …

*McKayla Geisinger, this name may not mean a lot to some of you, but it means a lot to others. McKayla was an athlete. She was a spirited girl who was part of a wonderfully family. Though McKayla is not with us anymore, she will live in our hearts forever. Some people knew her from school, some knew her from sports, and they even knew her from church.

McKayla and her family used to come to St. John Neumann’s and McKayla was part of the Children’s Chorus. McKayla was also a cheerleader on the Mite Team. The Mite Team that year came in 1st at the State Competition. Her coaches and teammates will never forget her, wherever they are.

After that cheerleading season was over, McKayla’s family had decided to switch to a closer church. Since they live in Mont Vernon, they switched to St. Patrick’s. Even though the Geisinger’s do not go to this church anymore, McKayla will stay in our heats and memories forever.

I would now like to offer a moment of silence in McKayla’s honor and memory! ***

Once again, God is shining through this veil of darkness …. I reflect on this scripture everyday:

“I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18). Subtract one from any number and there is always less … everyone who knew McKayla … feels her loss. Please continually keep us in your prayers!

Moe: Your post about what you former church is doing brought tears to my eyes. I am going through a difficult time with my teen right now and its very comforting to hear this story and to know that you are sounding much better…

Thank you Kayla … (my KK’s name) - was it one of the boys who died suddenly at Lacrosse in MA?

I am so sorry for your loss. The kids in our community are having a very difficult time with KK’s loss.

Thank you for reaching out to me.

Always,

Dear Maureen,
I haven’t had a chance to write in the past two days. I wanted to go back and read all of the thread–all 44 pages, so I would know where you have been these past three 1/2 months and also to know what has been shared with you. I made it through the first 10 pages on Monday. There have been some wonderful bits of wisdom from people. Especially the Scripture. I am amazed at the Scriptural knowledge of Catholics these days. Used to be that Catholics didn’t know the Bible at all.

I did want you to know that I was praying for you in the night last night and there is something I wanted to share. I think you had mentioned wishing you had a sign from God that all is well with McKayla. You may have had posts about this that I haven’t read yet, but what I remembered was that I believe I have had several.

I told you that Patrick died on a Saturday, but he was not found until just before midnight on Monday, I had turned my phone off so the Los Angeles police could not reach us. Instead they sent a sheriff’s chaplain the next morning. We are in the city so they should have sent a police chaplain. Anyway, they told him, “This is a really unusual street name” and he said, “I know–I live on that street.” It is only two blocks long. He is our neighbor and his wife had been in a neighborhood Bible study with me. So we did not hear of Patrick’s death from a hardboiled LA cop, but from a Christian neighbor. We were able to kneel and pray and cry with him. What precious provision that was.

Second, after we found out all the details, I remembered that I hadn’t been able to sleep that night and had gotten up and gone downstairs and was praying for Patrick at the hour of his death. I was praying for God to just get hold of him, to do whatever He had to do, what ever way He had to. I didn’t think He would take him home, but I believe God knew that was the only way, and that He took him early to save him. (It’s a long story.)

Third I have had many dreams about him that are very unusual. He has been all different ages and has appeared with people who were not in the same time frame. And I have always known that he is dead–even though he is alive in my dream. He was with my father and with my granddaughter–they were all together and knew each other, though Dad knew neither that Pat died–because Dad went first–or that Lauren had been born.

I have had many dreams that are similar to this. The thing that I consider significant is that they seem to be a glimpse of eternity–where time as we know it–with past, present, future–is not relevant. All time seems to be NOW. The Bible says that God knows the end from the beginning. He knew before Pat was born that he would die at 24. And He who created McKayla knew of her heart defect. He created her inmost being, He knit her together in your womb…her frame was not hidden from Him when she was made. His eyes saw her unformed substance. He numbered all her days before she was born (Ps 139), and I am sure you would have still chosen to have her for those 13 years, as I would have chosen to have Patrick.

So I believe that my dreams were showing me a glimpse of eternity. I have a way to understand it that is not very theological, but it helps me. I think of life like a movie that we are still watching scene by scene, but God knows the end from the beginning. He wrote the script and He has it all under His sovereign control. He was not asleep when our children died. “The God of Isreal neither slumbers nor sleeps” He was watching over their lives, their going out and their coming in…(Ps 121).

The last sign I want to tell you about occured the August after Pat’s death. We were at my sister’s house at the beach. We rode over to the beach on our bikes everyday. And every day for two weeks there was a boy there that could have been Patrick’s identical twin. It just took my breath away to see him. He was built the same, he walked the same, he even tossed his wet hair from his eyes just the way Pat did when he swam. I never spoke to him; I just watched him. It was like getting to see Patrick again. And we have never seen that boy again–not even later that summer. We both believe he was an angel that God sent to comfort us. I may be nuts, but it was so amazing–even my sister was kind of freaked out by the resemblance. Maybe it was Patrick’s guardian angel, come in his human form. Anyway, I had prayed for a sign, and I believe God gave me those.

They may not even let me post this it is so long. But this is what I was thinking about last night when I prayed for you. God prompted me to share.

I’ll write again later as I have read more of the thread. God bless you,

Alison

THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL POSTED … I JUST PI’D YOU … LOVE MOE

Hi, I wanted to tell you thank you for sharing McKayla’s story. You’ve been on my mind and in my prayers for several weeks.
I especially want to thank you because you inspired me to take my son to the doctor. He has complained of chest pain off and on for about a year. Well, he’s 8 and kind of a baby so I have been blowing him off. But after his baseball game on Monday he was complaining again and McKayla was on my mind so I decided to take him in. Yesterday, an echocardiogram found that he has a bicuspid(instead of a normal tricuspid) aorta valve with a mild leak. With this knowlege we’ll be able to take the preventitve measures that he’ll need to stay healthy. And he’ll still be able to fulfill his dream of becoming a priest. Words can’t express how grateful I am to you (and perhaps McKayla herself) for nudging me to finally get him checked out.
God bless you! You and your family will always, ALWAYS be in my prayers!

Thanks again Moe. I’ve made an appointment with the cardiologist to talk over his long term prognosis more thoroughly. It seems that now that they know it’s there, it will be watched closely for complications and the valve will likely be replaced or repaired when the doctors deem it necessary.
God bless!

Thank you Kayla … (my KK’s name) - was it one of the boys who died suddenly at Lacrosse in MA?

I am so sorry for your loss. The kids in our community are having a very difficult time with KK’s loss.

Thank you for reaching out to me.

Always,
Mrs. G
