Dear All,
I am engaged to marry next week. Have been preparing for the marriage since August this year. I have been a virgin through out my life and had wanted to preserve it for my wife.

Suddenly from day before yesterday I suffer erectile dysfunction(ED). My sexual organ (Penis) is not active as it used to be and is not getting erect as it was.

I don’t smoke or drink and is not diabetic too. Last week was really busy with lot of work and preparations for marriage. I too am observing lent/ fastings for this advent season.
Really worried about this and tensed. Should I go forward with this marriage. Please advise.

Of course, we can’t give medical advice on this forum, and I’m not going to try.

All the same, it sounds to me like you have nothing to worry about. Up until 2 days ago you were fine, and now you’re having some trouble. Every guy goes through periods of stress and anxiety, and it may be that fasting is having some effect. We’re not canonically obliged (in the Roman Rite) to fast during Advent, so maybe you ought to loosen that fast up a bit as the wedding approaches, the wedding itself should be a feast day for you and your wife of course! The only impediment to marriage is permanent and irreparable impotence - that would usually mean something like not having a penis at all, or being totally paralyzed (although even paraplegics can often do things to regain erectile function). A phase like this is unlikely to be a problem.

Maybe you’re putting too much pressure on yourself. If you’ve remained a virgin until marriage (first up, a big 👍 for fighting for purity, that’s awesome) but maybe you’re making too big a deal out of the sex side of things, worrying you have to give the performance of your life on your wedding night. Relax. You and your wife-to-be have a whole lifetime to grow together and learn how to please eachother in bed.

Forgive me for prying, but how do you know that your penis is not in working order at the moment? Do you usually masturbate? If so, you need to stop that before your wedding, and go to confession, and get some help keeping it under control. If it’s just a case of getting aroused at day-to-day thoughts and events, maybe you’re just getting a better degree of self-control, maybe it’s not DISfunction at all, but your penis functioning the way it ought to for a man who is not yet married, i.e. saving itself for the right occasion, the marriage bed.

Thanks for the post.It gives lot of comfort.
No I am not masturbating. In fact I had realised it as a sin, confessed and has abstained from it since. My problem is that the sexual organ which used to be erect during night and early morning is not in that mode since day before yesterday. At times when I get aroused too, the orgain used to be erect, which is not the case now.

Ask a doctor, he should clear away your doubts and explain what’s why and so on.

  1. See a doctor, like yesterday.
  2. Talk to your fiancée and tell her what’s going on. If this is a permanent problem do you want her to spend her life questioning whether you love her, whether she’s not woman enough to turn you on, whether she’s too unattractive to you, etc…?
  3. Make sure that this isn’t your body’s way of telling you something you refused to consciously see: you don’t want to get married. A psychosomatic reaction is not unknown in these cases. Brides have been known to become paralyzed because they really didn’t want to walk down that aisle. Rare but it happens.

If you’re observing in the sense that you’re not eating meat, you could be eating a lot of soy. Soy produces a synthetic, plant-based estrogen that is very similar to human estrogen. It’s affected friends of mine in the way you describe.

Please refer your medical questions to a health care practitioner.
