Suffering and God's Will

If God doesn’t positively will suffering, but permits it, then how does that fit in with the crucifixion of Jesus. Did not God will His Son die on the cross? Jesus prayed that God’s will be done.

God doesn’t will that bad things happen, God wills that we react to those bad things with charity, kindness, patience, love, forgiveness, humility, etc.
