Can we offer our suffering for the sake of others? Can they be living?

You sure can!

In fact, monasteries are loaded with monks and nuns, who offer their penances and suffering, for others.

Saints also offered their suffering for others.

I believe the Church calls this, “redemptive suffering.”

And it’s a great way for us on earth, to “try” for sainthood! Offer your entire day to Our Lord… for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of souls. All of your work, prayers, suffering AND joy! Give it all to Our Lord. He’ll take it from there… 😉 God bless.

So can we cause ourselves to suffer? I’m not talking about hurting myself, just making myself uncomfortable and offering my suffering for other sinners.

AJ…it depends on what you mean by “cause ourselves to suffer”. If you mean, making small sacrifices to Our Lord (giving up food you like, or entertainment of some sort)… I’d say, yeah… that’s probably fine.

But if anything else, of a more severe nature… I would go and talk to a priest first, and ask for his advice. I’ve learned from the wise people here at CAF… that you must be careful about penances. We must be careful not to do penances out of any sort of “self love”. A priest could guide you, very well in this. God bless.

thats like me suffering being dissy and staying up later not making dinner and getting ill so i can talk more about god. ya stupid idea but i always do it.

Everyday life has plenty of thorns within it, that you can offer up in sacrifice, for others.

Word of caution here. Such sacrifices are between you and God. As soon as you make it known to people, you risk doing it out of pride, which makes the sacrifice for yourself, rather than the one you supposedly offered it for.

All these things must be done in humility.
