I had always suspected that heaven might not be pure bliss, that the saints at least groan at our sin.

But I caught something interesting on Catholic Radio a while back. In discussion of a St. Mary apparition, it was said that:

Mary suffers.

The language was quite strong and unequivcal referring to the torment she felt at, for example, abortion. There was a reference to a heart surrounded by thorns.

I didn’t catch enough of the broadcast to know what they were referring to and I was unable to find anything searching the web later.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I think as long as the world exists, the inhabitants of Heaven will sorrow as well as rejoice with us, especially as we ask for their intercession for our concerns.

For example, one of the great apparitions conveying the suffering Our Lady felt was at the Holy Mountain of La Salette. One of my patron fathers examined this apparition and wrote a book about it.

On the 19th of September 1946, she appeared weeping and was wearing a chain on which hung the instruments of the Passion. She told the two children:

Si mon peuple ne veut pas soumettre, je suis forcée de laisser aller la main de mon fils.
If my people will not submit, I shall be forced to let go the hand of my Son.

It is so strong, so heavy, that I can no longer withhold it.

For how long a time do I suffer for you! If you would not have my Son abandon you, I am compelled to pray to Him without ceasing.

And as to you, you take no heed of it.

However much you pray, however much you do, you will never recompense the pains I have taken for you.

Jesus, God and man,
imprisoned by love in Thy most holy Sacrament,
have mercy upon us.
  • Blessed John Henry Newman, December 22, 1851

God loves to be resisted in His displeasure, and to be restrained by the humble from inflicting punishment… One saint will often save a nation; so true is it that humble souls are the hinges on which God moves the world.

I think La Salette was 1846.

Luke 2 : 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy (St Mary’s) own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Thank you, Ed Silvia, for catching that typo! 1846 was indeed the year.

Thanks for the replies and direction. This is, indeed, what I had heard on Catholic Radio:
Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me, and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me (5).

So now my curiosity is truly aroused. Where would I find more discussion of this notion of saints suffering in heaven? It is not something I recall ever hearing before.
