I believe I am posting this in the right place, if not, please move it to the proper place; I am looking for specific scriptural references to suffering, and perhaps indulgences, particularly in the Pauline Epistles. I remember listening to one of Scott Hahn’s tapes and how, during his conversion, he had a difficult time reconciling being called to suffer as a part of his faith.

The reason I am looking for these references is that my mom has been suffering extreme physical pain from a condition called RSD due to a very bad ankle dislocation and fracture in 2003. She suffers so greatly that told me that she has begun to pray for an early death and she wants me to pray for such as well–and of course, I can’t do that because I know that is wrong. My mom is only 57, and I know she is severely depressed and lonely. She gets sick a lot and although we make plans to see her, she often calls and cancels because she is not up for the visit. This just adds to her depression.

To complicate matters, she is also suffering at work; her coworkers are constantly discriminating against her and her disability. My mom is legally disabled and is covered under the ADA, but some of her coworkers try to submit complaints from everything to her scooter --which she needs to get around because she can barely walk most days–to the time she takes off from work for doctor visits–time which she submits under FMLA and does not receive payment. My mother’s work performance, despite her absences, is exemplary and documented as such–she stays late on the days that she is there and does not submit the hours so she doesn’t get paid for that either, but she does it so that she won’t be forced into an early retirement–she simply can’t afford it. She has even gone so far as to retain a lawyer to fight some of the injustices that have been occurring–such as trying to get her to submit paperwork under short and long-term disability that doesn’t apply to her being totally disabled. Unfortunately, her financial resources are limited, so she has had to endure further injustices, but she documents them all so that if and when she finds the money, she can fight.

I pray for my mom all of the time, and over the last night and today I have been giving her good scriptural references with regard to suffering but I’m sure there are more.

I have been trying to explain to her that her suffering–both physically and mentally–is a wonderful opportunity in that she can offer it up for her own salvation and for others; she is starting to come around, and I really want to bolster this idea with her scripturally. She is a bit weak with scripture, but she is very well versed in her catechism so it’s been a bit alarming to hear her petition for death–she would never take her own life–and I think that scripture may help provide her with a little more back-bone to remain here with us and really understand what it is to offer up her pain to our Lord.

So far these are the passages I’ve given to her:

Rom 5:3-5.
Rom 8:12-27
2 Cor 1:3-11
2 Cor 4:7-12, 16-18
2 Cor 6:4-10

Thank you in advance.

Here’s another good verse from St. Paul. From the Douay-Rheims:
Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church:

Hi Jennifer. It was with a real sense of pain that I read your account of your Mom above. Pain, because I felt really bad for her that not only is she having a bad experience at work over this; but also that her disability is so painful. I have had severe, intractable pain for long periods of time; and I have an idea what it is like…

I thought I would enclose a passage that has been very meaningful to me during my trials and pain:
**1Pe 4:12 **Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
**1Pe 4:13 **But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
“When His glory shall be revealed” has always made me think of hope. The hope of the resurrection. certainly then; His “glory shall be revealed.” I have always seen this passage as urging us to a future hope - even when it seems that this life has no hope.

I guess that this is because the Bible actually tells us:
1Co 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
This means to me that even when this life has little or no hope; there is the future hope that all who give their hearts and lives to Jesus will experience TOGETHER.

I have to give all the credit to Jesus who knew me well enough to work with me through all the times of pain and suffering I had for seven years. I can personally testify:
Mic 7:8 Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
I believe that you Mom can have this experience too. I will pray for her to have this happen. 🙂

Dr. Hahn makes this point in his series “Romanism in Romans”. He points out St. Paul’s stressing that suffering unites us to Christ and he does so especially in the second half of chapter eight. Dr. Hahn specifically cites Rm 8:17*“and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”*

The following Catechism quotes may also help.
1521 Union* with the passion of Christ*. By the grace of this sacrament the sick person receives the strength and the gift of uniting himself more closely to Christ’s Passion: in a certain way he is consecrated to bear fruit by configuration to the Savior’s redemptive Passion. Suffering, a consequence of original sin, acquires a new meaning; it becomes a participation in the saving work of Jesus.
1522 An ecclesial grace. The sick who receive this sacrament, “by freely uniting themselves to the passion and death of Christ,” “contribute to the good of the People of God.” By celebrating this sacrament the Church, in the communion of saints, intercedes for the benefit of the sick person, and he, for his part, through the grace of this sacrament, contributes to the sanctification of the Church and to the good of all men for whom the Church suffers and offers herself through Christ to God the Father
